Are the Pogues helpless or what?

Post Tue Apr 08, 2008 8:03 pm

Who exactly is responsible for the "marketing strategy" of the Pogues? Rhino? Warners? Anthony Addis? The Pogues?
I ask because in this day and age, I find if unbelievable that the Pogues allow a situation where, two years later, a DVD filmed in New York in March 2006 is not even on the horizon yet. This is just laughable. Consider that films reach DVD a mere four months after general realease. Never mind the fact that the Pogues have a huge audience out there just dying out for a DVD of one of the most dynamic live bands ever.
Thank God the box set is coming out at last, although here too, one would expect it to be released in tandem with either a Christmas tour or Amercian tour. Which comes back to my question of marketing.
I have a fierce love for the Pogues, but, for God's sake, when will this DVD be released? 2010? 2020? Or a 100-year anniversary special in October 2082?

I think you put your finger on it. We don't have a "marketing strategy". We're The Pogues.

I doubt if Philip was ever the one making the DVD. My apologies, Mr. Chevron if you are busy burning and packing them right now.

You don't really want them to wait until the fall--the earliest they could possibly come to America again, if we're lucky--or even next spring for Paddy's, do you?!

Don't speak such heresy. You'll give someone at Rhino terrible ideas. :P

I've been thinking about it, and I actually kind of like the way the Pogues aren't too visible in America. What with the Dropkick Murphys and the mediocre pseudo-Irish trend in American music, more marketing could give the Pogues a large hipster following. There were two expensive-cell-phone waving, ironic-t-shirt wearing hipsters at the show I saw, and that's two too many. It's not like a large hipster following could ruin their music, but I for one would enjoy their shows a lot less if I was surrounded by rich idiots taking grainy pictures to upload to facebook and myspace and what have you instead of enjoying the experience.

Damn. I suck. I was wearing a western-style shirt at a couple of the recent shows, and was taking grainy pictures (though not with a cell phone, and not for Facebook or MySpace).

I had no idea I was a hipster. Aren't I too old for that?

Nah. You were taking real photos (from what I've seen you do an excellent job by the way). Hipsters more do it so they can be seen by other hipsters.

Also if by Western style you mean with fringes and rawhide and what not, those aren't ironic as they never went out of style.

More yoke with swirls, piping, and embroidered roses on the shoulders and between the scapula. Sometimes called "cowboy shirts" I suppose.

Wow. I'd really make a crappy hipster. I didn't even know they had never gone out of style. What about the The Beat shirt I was wearing under it on at least one night?

But an attempt to answer the original poster's question - I doubt that The Pogues are any more messed up marketing-wise than any other band that isn't being heavily promoted by a label. Things happen when they happen, or they don't happen. The big difference these days is that you find out about them 'cause of this churning soup of data on Teh Intarwebs. Once-upon-a-time if a creative project you'd have been interested in failed to see the light of day, you would probably have never known of the failure. These days the slightest whisper of a project quickly makes it way around, and if that project failures to bear fruit then there's much hand-wringing about it.

Hell - The sheer volume of the Box Set (volume == stuff, not volume == amplitude) if a fantastic indicator of the amount of stuff that typically does NOT bear fruit in its day. Out-takes, demos, unfinished noodling, whatever. There's a lot of things in all of our lives/careers/creative outlets that for whatever reason gets shelved.

I definitely pissed off some people around me at the Seattle show by wearing my cowboy hat. If only I would have thought to start a thread asking what sort of attire was expected of me.

Well all I can say is that you're all tremendously lucky that I'm here.

I concur. The sooner, the better. Been waiting for this DVD for ages. (Ages in this instance being two years.)

Heh. I kind of like the mental image of Philip sitting at his computer, furiously burning DVD after DVD.
