Pogues music playable on the trumpet....??

Post Fri Dec 21, 2007 2:40 pm

Please can any trumpet players out there advise me of the availablility of any Pogues music that my son can play? And if so any sheet music etc

He's a 9 yr old who's been playing for 3 years and is getting very good at it (he can read music well).

He loves the Pogues and has a junior musician competition in the New Year - I'd love to hear him play Fiesta or Rainy Night in Soho!

I have the piano/voice/guitar 'Best of' book. It has 'A Pair of Brown Eyes' in it among other great songs. You could buy that and arrange it for trumpet by changing the key or look on line for a trumpet copy.

Toby, the book he's referring to is probably "The Best Of The Pogues" which came out the same time as the LP and CD of the same name - the one with the dog with a framed pic of the band around his neck. It contains lyrics, toplines and piano chords. If your son wants to play the melodies of Fiesta etc, it'll be fine (read the toplines), but if he wants to play the actual trumpet PARTS, that is a more specialised area and will require a proper music "reader" to figure out. Alternatively, if his "ear" is good enough - this is a talent which not even all GREAT musicians necessarily have - he may just pick up these parts himself anyway.

Many thanks!
I shall get hold of this book and see what he makes of it. He is well capable of 'adlibbing' - current favorites being the can-can and wallace and grommit theme tune (both played thorugh the 'ear' technique)....
