Favourite version of FTONY?

Hi !

Here is a german version of FTONY from the german band BAP feat. Nina Hagen and The Kelly Family. Must be from the time where The Kellys were pretty big in Germany. I like the male singer, but Nina Hagen doesn't fit...plus it is sung in "kölsch"...a special dialect from Cologne where BAP comes from. The Kellys only sing in the very last minute.

The recorded album version with Shane and Kirsty and the strings...by the way: in the "Fall From Grace"-Documentary, Shane claims that he "arranged every note of it, even the string arrangement, apart from a little riff by Jem..." but I think I read somewhere that the strings were done by a female musician? What's the truth?

Shane likes to keep the facts on their toes from time to time. I have established beyond doubt that "Fairytale" is very much a MacGowan/Finer composition, just like it says on the label. The band arrangement is by the Pogues - all 8 of us - and the string arrangement is a joint effort by Fiachra Trench and James Fearnley.

Yeah, I knew that it is credited to Shane and Jem. It's great how Jem talks about his first attempt at writing a christmas song, admitting that it was "Crap and rubbish about a sort of heartbroken sailor who commited suicide in the end" and "sentimental christmas rubbish"

By the way, I despise the Ronan Keating version of it and can't really understand how Shane can like it I really don't see a point in changing the original lyrics because a word might be rude or a swear word...

So i've just finished watching the 1981 BBC pilot "K-9 and Company", a Dr. Who spin-off (yup, i'll do ANYTHING for my daughter) and the closing credits listed "Theme song by Fiachra Trench". And i'm thinking "I know that name, i've just read it somewhere"...

It was certainly an interesting version! I rather like the male singer's voice as well, but Nina Hagen sounded like she'd barged in from another song! And I could definitely have done without the Kellys and their syrupy ending! Thanks for posting the link.

The singer released Joan Jett's track in 2002 but music fans were unimpressed with Spears' rendition - NME readers have voted it their least favourite cover.

Ronan Keating's Fairytale of New York by The Pogues came second in the shameful survey, while Celine Dion's version of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long was named third.

Muse's rendition of Feeling Good by Nina Simone was branded the best cover of recent years in the poll.
