I can't figure out why, but I love this song. Even with terrible lyrics like:

I love your lips I love your eyes
I love your breasts I love your thighs

Still - I love this song.
“I know all those people that were in the film [...] But that’s when they were young and strong and full of life, you know?”

What's the story about Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah anyway? It stands out from Shane's other material with regards to the completely pointless lyrics. Don't get me wrong, I like the song, but it's a very straightforward pop number. He never wrote anything else like this and it doesn't relly sound like a Pogues song.

This is a total guess. I know nothing. Maybe Philip or James can fill us in. That said - My Guess:

I bet that the label pressured the band into it.

"Guys" quoth they, "we need something that's radio friendly! Sometime with some pep! Something that will make the teenage girls all swoon and the teenage boys all jealous! Something with that great Motown sound, with loots of 'Woos' and 'Yeahs'!"

I'm probably wrong though.

Yes, that's quite possible. Didn't they do that dreadful version of "Honky Tonk Woman" at around the same time?

We all genuinely loved "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah". The record company were far from convinced (no shamrocks), but at least we didn't offer them "Contact Yourself" instead, he he he he he.

We were going through one of our periodic "let's see what *else* we can do" moments. As it was Shane's baby, and he who reintroduced it for the December 2004 shows, it kind of shows up his argument that "the Pogues were drifting away from Irish music in directions I didn't like" for the bollocks it always was.

Shane, like the rest of us, has always been restlessly curious about music of all types. Also, he was a genuine Northern Soul kid, and can still, in his more athletic moments, execute a great backflip. There is a direct line from "Gabrielle" to "London Girl" to "Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah".

"Yeah" showed up most of the Manc e-bands and acid bands for the frauds they really were. We weren't even *supposed* to be good at this.

Now "Honky Tonk Women", on the other hand......was a monumental error.

Well there. I was indeed wrong.

What makes me sad about this is that I actually like "Honky Tonk Women." Sure, it's not "Poguesy." Sure, your interpretation didn't really do anything new for the song. It was still good. But then I also like your live cover of "Maggie May".

And the video for it is so... I'd say, psychodelic...
It was on the 23rd of June
As I lay blasted in my room
A small bird sang on an ivy branch
And the song they sang was the "Jug of Punch"

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah is awesome, but the lyrics are just a bunch of cliché's thrown together.

Eternal values, yes. The Beatles "She loves you/yeah, yeah, yeah" cannot be improved.

For more on the judicious use of cliché in popular song, see George and Ira Gershwin's "Blah Blah Blah". No, really.

Didn't Jerry Seinfeld and his cast perform a cover of this, slightly updated for the late 1990s? Something along the lines of "Yadda Yadda Yadda."

:)

I love that video. Andrew and the drum kit on a riser, etc. The video very well captured the sillyness of "Top of The Pops," "American Bandstand," etc from the fifties and sixties.

Yes, "Ready Steady Go" was another template. It's directed (like "Fiesta") by Ade Edmondson, the British comedian.

James is alas not in the video - the accordion player is Charlie McLennan. The TV presenter is Frank Murray.

Wow! I will go over it again when come home today...
Now it seems i noticed something like accordionist's exterior differed from usual James'. But I never surmised it was Charlie... Plus Frank Murray.
It definitely deserves attentive examination. Hope I won't forget to do it getting home...
