This is a rather subjective opinion, and one that I happen to disagree with. Jem did some particularly fine writing for the final two albums.

The Pogues changed their flavor a bit (more pop/world) after they and Shane parted ways. Shane also changed in the flavor of his music (more traditional Celtic sounding, less pop/world).

Of the two albums offered by The Pogues (<i>Waiting for Herb</i> and <i>Pogue Mahone</i>)and by Shane (<i>The Snake</i> and <i>Crock of Gold</i>) after the split, I prefer the The Pogues'.

no way jose.

the pogues were not world/pop/rock band, they were a traditional-irish/pop/rock band. without their irish flavor they just weren't the pogues. like the lord macgowan said, " *drunken slur* they were trying to phase out irish musica all together, you know what i mean? i said, i said, that's what we do, is, is irish music, you know what i mean? right? yeah?"

plus, no one else could compare to the lyrical and vocal abilities of shane.

not to say that the last two pogues albums were bad. they were decent. but with most of the original members gone and their original style and genre of music gone, the pogues weren't the pogues.

so i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. :P

I'm with you on this one DZM.
Waiting for Herb and Pogue Mahone don't really compare to any of the other pogues records with Shane, but that is not to say that they were not good records. I think that the songs on those records are a little experimental, and exciting because of it. Not to mention that their was some great song writing on those albums, which proved that the band was fully capable without Shane.
I still throw on Waiting for Herb far more than I put on the Snake......

Matters of opinion

Post Sun Feb 01, 2004 9:02 pm

I agree that The Pogues' sound changed considerably after Shane's departure. I just don't agree that the change made them "go to hell."

Really.

Musical growth isn't always bad. U2's <i>The Joshua Tree</i> is a brilliant album, but is completely different to <i>War</i>. The Beatles' <i>Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band</i> is a masterpiece and would barely be recognizable as a product of the same band that created <i>A Hard Day's Night</i>

But I ramble - While I don't think that the last two albums will ever be thought of as being as good as the earlier six albums, I still enjoy them. I also don't think Shane's two solo efforts (so far) are not on par with The Pogues' first six albums.

Ofcourse the last two pogues albums aren't as good as the two or three first albums, but i don't think they are bad records. There are some really good songs on them.

no, more like the ones on "red roses for me", almost all the ones on "rum, sodomy, and the lash", most on "if i should fall from grace", and many on "peace and love" and "hell's ditch", plus other shit not on those. :P

OK, "Waiting For Herb" is a bit weak. However, it really was no worse then "Peace and Love". "Pogue Mahone" on the other hand is one damn fine CD. It sounds crisp, the writing is top-notch, and the mandolin/banjo/whistle/drums sound very good. Musically, "Pogue Mahone" is one of my favorites. In the end, for a swan-song, it stands very well.

ironicly, i didnt like Waiting for herb when I first heard it, and it has since become one of the pogues albums i listen to the most. The same with peace and Love, which I hated at first and now it's one of my favorites. I'll take what people consider to be the worst of Shane and the pogues over the best of what any other group does is any day.
