I know Shane plays on Johnny Come Lately in the studio footage from Completely Pogued and on Live at T&C. Apparently (according to Shane :P ) it pissed Jem off big time when Shane started playing tenor banjo? Is that true? From what I've read on liner notes, Phil also played banjo in the studio.

The Pogues 5-string banjo player is Jem Finer, though I rather think it takes considerably more than Shane's banjo playing to piss him off, big or small time. Anyone else in the band who picks up the instrument is just dabbling except Terry Woods who is something of an expert exponent of "Frailing" banjo, though I don't think he ever played it on any records. I cannot recall playing banjo on a Pogues record, though I did replace Jem for a tour of Germany and a tour of Scandinavia in early 1985 when Jem was on paternity leave. Barney McKenna and Ron Kavana (both tenor banjo, not 5-string) have also guested on records of course, the former with The Dubliners, the latter on "Thousands Are Sailing". Steve Earle's most recent biographer David McGee, spoke to me about the "Johnny Come Lately" sessions and I understand they are covered in some depth in the resulting book.

Pogues banjo

Post Fri Sep 15, 2006 11:09 am

Thanks to all for the insights/information.

I've seen some pictures of Jem Finer playing what looks to be a 5 string without the fifth string. I'm always impressed with the beautiful sound the banjo makes on the early albums. Does anybody know what kind of banjo it is? I thought it was sounded like a Vega tubaphone but the pictures looked like Gibson or Stelling resonator banjos.

Whatever it was, it had a wonderful tone. I'd apprecaite it greatly if somebody could tell me what that banjo was. I'm talking mostly about the one used on "Waltzing Matilda."

Thanks for your help.

Jem Finer's Banjo(s)

Post Mon Sep 18, 2006 2:20 am

I'm a big Pogues fan. I'm particularly fond of their use of the banjo.

I'm thinking specifically of the banjo sound on "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda." The banjo on that cut (and on other cuts as well) has a wonderful resonant, almost hollow, clear sound.

I've seen pictures of Jem playing what looks to be a five string without the 5th string. (at least I can't see it.) The banjo looks like a Gibson or a Stelling with a resonator. I always thought it sounded like a tubaphone and assumed it would be a tenor but I guess I was wrong.

I'd really like to know about his choice of banjos.

Thanks for your help.

I can't tell you anything about what he uses. Here's some photos that might help enlighten you though:

Jems Banjo

Post Mon Sep 18, 2006 11:45 am

Hi there!
As far as I know, Jem used to play a Maya-5-String Banjo in the late 80s and then changed to a Gibson (Earls Scruggs model) which is one wonderful Instrument.
I have also seen him live with a Deering Crossfire Banjo which is some kind of a banjo-telecaster-hybrid. But in my opinion the Crossfire sounds really bad!

Cheers! :D

I play tenor banjo. Do you think its possible to transpose the 5-string style of playing mr finer uses onto the tenor without sounding like a git?

You could always try but it's a totally different style

Hi Hooperman!
I don´t think that it is possible to play most of Mr. Finers 5-String Banjo-rolls with a Tenor. Though there is no 5th String, which is used as a drone mostly playing a G you can´t get that typical country sound. But there are some Poguessongs which can be played with a Tenor, where Jem does not uses the 5th String:
Old Main Drag, Walzing M., Big and White City, Ghost Of A Smile and The Sunnyside Of The Street.
Cheers, Jan
