Jem on tenor banjo?

Post Wed Mar 12, 2008 3:18 pm

Question for the Finer fans out there: has Jem ever played tenor banjo in a performance? He plays octave mando with the Pogues as well as regular mandolin, and these are tuned the same as the tenor banjo. Also, since tenor banjo is such an intrinsic part of a lot of Irish bands, it would sort of stand to reason. I play Pogues on tenor banjo and it sounds great, I wonder if Jem himself has ever picked up on this...I can just imagine Turkish Song of the Damned with the barbaric banjo twang...it would sound amazing!

I've been playing 5 string banjo for about two months now.

I can play the chords to Dirty Old Town in rhythm while singing, the melody to South Australia in rhythm while singing, and I've written a few songs of my own.

I'm thinking about learning This Land is Your land or Oklahoma Hills next, anyone got other suggestions for a newish player?

hi vagabond,

firstly checkout " folk punk tabs " where i've sent some 5 strg tabs in the tab request section of the forum. also there are some more pogues 5strg bajo tabs at " fretplay " site.

secondly if you like abit of bluegrass a tune called cumberland gap is a simple tune and you can get a basic tab and you can here abit of the tune at the " jay buckey " site.

Thanks, that's a decent site.

Does anyone know off the top of their head if Down By the Salley Gardens is difficult?

Sensible footwear is advised, but it shouldn't cause too much difficulty to a person of moderately good health.

There are two tunes called Sally Gardens (or Down by the Sally Gardens), do you mean the slower song (starting with G, I think), or the bouncy one (starting with A)?

Anyway, both are pretty simple, or should be :-)

I'm just looking for the slow one with the verses.

Y'know,
It was Down by the Salley Gardens, my love and I did meet/She walked round the Salley Gardens with beautiful snow white feet.

Banjo tabs for all folk songs are surprisingly hard to find, I guess the market is smaller than guitar.

Here's a ukelele performance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-al5oqt3nyM

For some reason, all the youtube videos are arranged in this awful style where it's either high voiced women and a piano or worse. I don't know much about arranging music, but I can sing a good South Australia, and I know the best way to play a folk song is with a banjo and maybe a guitar, and the best way to sing it is barely. Luke Kelly never added extra flourishes.

I´m with you on this one :-) I do believe it´s kind of obvious this guy doesn´t play much ITM. Of course, voice ornamentation is a beautiful thing to do, especially with sean-nos songs, or some slower tunes, but it shouldn´t be the main thing - the main body has to be solid voice. Kevin Conneff is a good example, in my opinion. I know what you mean with high voiced women :-D I´m fed up with them (unless they´re really good) - looking like they´re gonna die any second while singing (I don´t like wannabefeelerofthemusic facial gymnastics too much with singers).

Anyway, can you read music? If so, there are some sheet music on the internet, or MIDI files you can open. If only tabs...but tabs aren´t that good, they don´t tell you the rhytm. Anyway, if you tell me tuning of your banjo, I could probably try to write a tab, but I can´t say if it´s gonna be any good, I´m no banjo player :-)

I can't read music, but I can write down the notes and then tab it if I have a key. That takes a while because I have to look up the note on the fretboard, and the notes on the music sheet.

My banjo's in open G tuning, g D G B D, the standard one. I'd love tabs. Thanks.

You can try this version, it looks rather allright - it´s in D (starting note is D), although I´ve seen it played in G most of the time...
