I have been to Xmas tour shows at Brixton, Belfast (amazing) and Dublin during the past five years but this is my first posting to website. Just had to add my thanks for a fantastic box set Mr Chevron. The best buy I have made in years

BBC Show 1986 (Box-Set)

Post Mon Jul 28, 2008 3:45 pm

Hy folks,

just got my copy of the box set and trying to get the time, to hear all the songs (didn´t manage that so far). But how awesome are the versions from "if i should fall from grace with god" and "the turkish song of the damned" taken from the 1986 BBC-Show (Disc 3)? Much slower than the original versions, but so smooth and clean, love that. "The Rake At The Gates Of Hell" is also a great song. Just my opinion!

PS: Did they play just these 3 songs in the show?

Is this box set available in Australia? The erection I had for this thing is slowly diminishing due to inability to find it anywhere.

Please help.

Ummm. I'm not sure what the list is intended to be used for, but it looks like you might have saved yourself some time by consulting this page:

How about we just be grateful for what we already have received?

So this was waiting for me when i returned from a month away ("house swapping" - you take my chinatown apartment, i'll take your lovely house in a semi-rural town walking distance to the ocean, thanks very much!) on July 28. I won't say i've been listening to nothing else since, but it's been on quite a bit. Hard to pick a favouite, but one track that jumped out was the demo of "Lullaby of London", with that (cittern? mando? mandocello? i'm guessing Mr. Woods, whichever) solo going on & on... just lovely. Lovely packaging, too, and a bargin for 5 discs.

Thank you so much for all your hard work, Mr. C. If it weren't for that month spent away (& the black bear in the driveway there!) i'd say you made my summer. Close second. You made the second half of my summer, how 'bout? Come December when it's rain & darkness here, i'll still have the box set to cheer me, though. Maybe that should make it number one? Whatever, thanks, thanks, & thanks. It's not that i'm bored of my Pogues albums, it's just always nice to have more!

Well ... The album credits (http://www.pogues.com/Releases/Disco/BoxSetPage.html) indicate this was band lineup "D" (the so-called "classic" lineup, post Cait). So my best guess would be that this was Kirsty guesting at a live show.

That unexpected departure in the demo of "Lullaby of London" is one of my favourite moments too and, as you can hear from his delighted exclamation on his live vocal track, it was one of Shane's too. I have to confess I made a few small ediits in it for use in the box set. Terry does not always sound like he knows exactly what he's doing on the full-length version, so I lopped a few small bits off to give his playing the fluidity for which I'm sure he was reaching.

I'm not sure why the speeded up coda did not make it to the official Fall From Grace version - perhaps we just forgot. Or maybe we thought it didn't work.

We had the pleasure of Kirsty MacColl's presence for the first time on that December 1987 UK Tour. In addition to "Fairytale Of New York", she sang back up on a few other songs including, "A Pair Of Brown Eyes", "Lullaby Of London" and, I think, her Dad's "Dirty Old Town".

The original 1985 studio recording of "Pair Of Brown Eyes" does, of course, feature Cait O'Riordan singing backing vocal.

On the box set, the 6 or 7 live tracks from 1987 were all recorded at Glasgow Barrowlands on that tour, over a number of nights with Steve Lillywhite supervising. We used them for b sides and extra tracks and so forth for a while, except "Kitty", which turned up on a free EP given away with Sounds magazine ("Sound Waves 3", I think). The box set was the first real opportunity we had to gather them all together. They're programmed in the wrong order, by the way, which was my attempt to correct the listening dynamic between them. Personally, I hate live recordings, but these are OK.
