14. Sally Maclennane (BBC John Peel Show)

I'm a bit confused about this one - I've got the "21 Years Of Independent Radio" compilation from way back when and it is supposed to be the 12/12/84 Peel session version but it different from the one on the box set. For starters the older version is 2.43 and the box set version is 2.53, and the older version has a long drum intro. Can anyone clarify?

Yes, I spent an entire day trying to resolve this. The version on the box set is not the same recording as was heard on 21 Years of Alternative Radio One or whatever it was called. That was a simple enough choice - release the version that had not previously been issued, as there wasn't much to choose between them in terms of performance. But it's true that some of the info the BBC sent me with their recordings was, at best, incomplete (which is why no producers or engineers are credited - we asked the BBC constantly for months to supply them, with no result) and, at worst, inaccurate.

Unfortunately, I do not have all the paperwork to hand right now. But my conclusion, if I remember correctly, is that we recorded "Sally" on three separate occasions for BBC Radio and, of these, the only one I can claim has accurate recording dates is the one on the box set, as it seems likely the BBC screwed up some of the dates on their own earlier release. But I don't want to be too harsh on the BBC - I found it a very puzzling experience on many levels trawling through their Pogues archive. And at least they did keep their Pogues recordings. Nothing survives of the sessions The Radiators made for BBC in 1978/1979.

Absolutely Brilliant!

Allright, so I've been listening to Disc 1, and it has some UNBELIEVABLY great songs. The cover of Dylan's "Eve of Destruction"? :D    AWESOME!!! "Alone in the Wilderness"? SO SO GOOD!!! "NW3"? (Which I guess is the same melody of one of Shane's songs with the Popes- 'mother mccree'?) Beautiful!!!
And this is only disc !?!?!?!? This means there's 4 more discs of this great stuff for me to wade through!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!
It only goes to show what a truly astonishing band the Pogues were.
NICELY DONE guys!!!

Box finally arrived yesterday and have only just got to CD 4 but think it's a spectacular job (I can finally stop worrying about how I'm going to play those tapes I made years ago of b-sides, rare tracks and collaborations or Pogues Spillages as I fancifully labelled them.

The track that has got to me most so far is the demo of Kitty which I think surpasses the Red Roses version and brought out the goosebumps. There seems to be a bigger sound and Shane's vocal doesn't strain as it does on the "original". The various BBC sessions all have a really powerful sound from the drums and bass which just adds to the cacophony.

Cool to hear Philip's vocal picked out against the If I Should Fall... backing for Thousands are sailing and I love The Mistlethrush

Want to spend a couple of days on the gargle and listening to the tunes.....like I always used to do......but have the bairns to get from school

Anyways, cheers for the work in getting it together, well worth the effort. Gutted about the Chieftains tracks mind.......was really excited about them. Guess they'll be more readily available elsewhere now

and not wanting to be a pedant but being one anyway, Daniel Isaac, Eve of Destruction is Barry McGuire not Dylan

I got a small package from amazon.com today. The packing slip said "IN THIS SHIPMENT 1 Just Look Them Straight in the Eye and Say...Pogue Mahone" but all I got was a sample of shea body butter! After spending quite a while explaining my situation to them on the phone, I realized that they still did not have the item in stock and they don't know when they're going to get it. But they did upgrade me to expedited shipping...bastards!

Hello people.

I came here today because was having difficulties loacating the box set. I was weighing my options, when I happened to check the Amazon.com site and guess what, it is showing 'In Stock' from Amazon.

No idea how long this will last but I am not dreaming and I have checked it twice, so don't kill me if it changes by the time you read this.

For whatever it's worth, I happen to know that Amazon USA has shipped more than 40 copies so far. It may not be constantly "in stock," but they are shipping it out.
