I'm a bit confused about this one - I've got the "21 Years Of Independent Radio" compilation from way back when and it is supposed to be the 12/12/84 Peel session version but it different from the one on the box set. For starters the older version is 2.43 and the box set version is 2.53, and the older version has a long drum intro. Can anyone clarify?
Yes, I spent an entire day trying to resolve this. The version on the box set is
not the same recording as was heard on
21 Years of Alternative Radio One or whatever it was called. That was a simple enough choice - release the version that had not previously been issued, as there wasn't much to choose between them in terms of performance. But it's true that some of the info the BBC sent me with their recordings was, at best, incomplete (which is why no producers or engineers are credited - we asked the BBC constantly for months to supply them, with no result) and, at worst, inaccurate.
Unfortunately, I do not have all the paperwork to hand right now. But my conclusion, if I remember correctly, is that we recorded "Sally" on three separate occasions for BBC Radio and, of these, the only one I can claim has accurate recording dates is the one on the box set, as it seems likely the BBC screwed up some of the dates on their own earlier release. But I don't want to be too harsh on the BBC - I found it a very puzzling experience on many levels trawling through their Pogues archive. And at least they did
keep their Pogues recordings. Nothing survives of the sessions The Radiators made for BBC in 1978/1979.
