I've heard the live version before and I love how the Pogues take a syrupy Rod Stewart pop song (one I really don't like very much) and turn it into a gritty, emotionally raw assault. They make it entirely their own and it's probably one of the best cover versions of a song I've ever heard. I can't wait to hear the unreleased studio (?) version on Disc 1, ear-bleedingly loud of course
Since I'm a little obsessed with this song, I wonder why it never garnered more attention. It's instantly recognizable and the cover version is is a vast improvement over the original; I'm thinking it could've been a reasonably successful single for the Pogues back in the day, or a least a strong album track. Why was this song only ever released as an obscure live B-side?
I suppose it will be closer to the Faces live version which certainly has more balls than Rod's solo version.
