I've heard the live version before and I love how the Pogues take a syrupy Rod Stewart pop song (one I really don't like very much) and turn it into a gritty, emotionally raw assault. They make it entirely their own and it's probably one of the best cover versions of a song I've ever heard. I can't wait to hear the unreleased studio (?) version on Disc 1, ear-bleedingly loud of course :)

Since I'm a little obsessed with this song, I wonder why it never garnered more attention. It's instantly recognizable and the cover version is is a vast improvement over the original; I'm thinking it could've been a reasonably successful single for the Pogues back in the day, or a least a strong album track. Why was this song only ever released as an obscure live B-side?

I suppose it will be closer to the Faces live version which certainly has more balls than Rod's solo version.

I could not help but notice that on track 3 there is a song listed as "A Needle for Paddy Garcia", is that a typo? is it not a Pistol for Paddy Garcia? Is it a different song?...was the title changed. I feel stupid asking, I guess these questions would be ansured within the liner notes...juin is just seems so far away,I have also caved and whent to the my space page for a preview :)

It's not listed on the german Amazon page yet

Why don't you order it from the UK-site? I buy there frequently.

Haste ja vollkommen recht!!

Oh, I'm sorry -> You're right Eckhard, I'll do that

amazon.de reduced the price for the Box-Set from 71,99€ to 51,99 € including shipping! So my fellow germans, you don't save anything really by ordering from amazon.co.uk 8)

philipchevron wrote:Sorry guys, I'm going to have to disappoint you. Once the laborious licensing and legal side of the box set was concluded yesterday, the two Pogues/Chieftains tracks are the only two which have failed to cross all legal hurdles. It's too complicated to explain here and anyway, it's been giving me a headache all week and I don't especially feel like re-living it, but basically there is insufficient paperwork to support the release, by Warners, of these cuts.

All this legal shit, which is the one single factor that has been delaying the release of Just Look Them Straight In The Eye..... has now been concluded otherwise, so there's no reason why the new and final release date, June 2nd, should not be met.

A major disappointment. :( The Chieftains tracks were the first things I looked for on the track list. Cannot believe that legalities would dare prevent the world from enjoying a collaboration between two of the most important groups in Irish music. That said, I am really looking forward to enjoying the box set. Thanks for putting the project together! :D

PS--Just curious as to what the tracks are that world is missing out on. Are you legally permitted to share that information, Mr. Chevron?

Wow, I never thought i'd hear a pogues song that is unlistenable... but 'Something Wild" is the closest I've heard... easily the worst pogues song I've ever heard!

Glued Up and Speeding reminds me a lot of Hot Dogs With Everything. My favorite track so far on the new myspace page has to go to the Pogues dazzling version of Rocky Road to Dublin. Connemara Lets Go is great (yes SonOfErin this was the original title of Down In the Ground Where the Dead Men Go.) Something Wild is kind of a throw away track, but still a pretty good one. Do You Believe In Magic (Shane and Cait duet,) is quite good, but I can't help to be reminded of the old McDonald's commercials (shudder)

Well I did not think it was not that bad. It’s obviously a predecessor to "London Girl"...I think that a box set should include songs that are raw and a bit unpolished(otherwise it would just be another "greatest hit"). These versions of the songs allow us to feel like were peeking into the Bands process a little...I like what I have heard so far and am very glad I have pre-ordered...I just can not wait(very exited).

And one thing the Pogues' cataloge does NOT need is another greatest hits package! At this point, those must outnumber the studio releases...

Something Wild isn't that bad although I wonder why Shane didn't go up a half note on the "wild." It sounds off.

I'd much rather have half-done versions or precursors to final songs than another remastered re-release. If they all want get into a communal shower and sing God Save The Queen to a kazoo accompaniment that'd be okay with me.

I would really like to find one of the promo sets with the Chieftains collaborations on it. Who here works at a music magazine and would like a new best friend? I'll bring cookies! :P

I don't mind that Something Wild track at all. One of the many things I love about The Pogues is that they can't be cornered into a particular style of music. As an example, look at the differences of those current tracks (off the boxset) that are on myspace. Glued Up And Speeding, Something Wild and Rocky Road To Dublin are all from the one band. The Pogues can play anything!!! One of my favorite tracks has always been Hot Dogs With Everything, and that sounds nothing like Red Roses For Me or Rum Sodomy & The Lash, which are my two favorite albums (that is, the remastered versions with all the B-sides).
