Pachinko. Just a wonderfully bizarre song that buries itself into my brain for weeks at a time.

"Tuesday Morning", "Drunken Boat" and "My Baby's Gone" are right up there. It took me far too long to discover the post-Shane Pogues albums, but they get heavy airplay at home.

I love My Baby's Gone- great great lyrics. Tuesday Morning, Small Hours, Drunken Boat and Wadi Hammamat are also favourites of mine.
I do think there were a few dodgy moments on Herb though- Modern World and Sitting On Top Of The World (I like the music but, in my opinion, it is one of The Pogues weakest lyrics) spring to mind. I think all 3 of the single B-sides from Herb were stronger than those two tracks.

I´m not quite sure about "First day of forever" - it´s a really great tune, but all this keyboard stuff on in turns me off. But I definitely agree about "Paris St Germain" and "Train kept rolling on", those are two brilliant songs (specially "Paris" - wonderful lyrics). :D

Paris St. Germaine, is a wonderful song and should have been included on the original track listing. I wish Spider and Terry got the chance to write more songs together, they make a rather winning combination. I mean Jack's Heroes just says it all.

Tuesday Morning
Once Upon a Time
Small Hours
Modern World

I agree with Pogues 24, Paris St. should've made the cut. Fabulous tune.

Is "Once Upon a Time" a veiled reference regarding Shane's Hell's Ditch behavior?

There's not much veiled about The Pogues.

Sorry you feel that way. For those that disagree, James Taylor (JTQ, Prisoners) is the man noodling on the Hammond B3.

Were you - as the writer - the main man behind the song´s arrangement ? And if so, had you originally intended this song to be as it turned out ?

I try imagine how this song would sound without the keyboard but with an additional mandolin (or fiddle). In my mind it would have made a pretty wonderful song.

The song was learned and on tape "live" in about 30 minutes at Elephant studios. I wanted to give the band a chordally quite complex piece of music (there's bits of Wagner and stuff in there) and have them play it like a conventional mid-tempo Pogues song. Jem Finer won the "that's a doddle award" for cracking it immediately, but then he's an ologist. After that, the "arrangement" is bare except for the later-overdubbed Organ, for which I specifically asked for Jamie Taylor on this track (I think he played on another while he was down at Real World Studios). You may be right, however. My heart went out of this song when I fucked up the writing of the lyrics and could never quite repair them. That said, it is no the most disappointing song in the collection and tends to have a small fan club, notably among non-Pogues fans.

Fuck it, I think The First Day of Forever is a brilliant song, and I for one simply love the arrangement. Bravo, Mr. Chevron.

Yeah I like it too, although I did laugh when I first heard the keyboard arrangement (sorry).

All three are beautiful songs and better than 'Pachinko'. Of 'Paris' there is another version, 'Love On Tillery', on 'Music From The Four Corners Of Hell' (The Woods Band), with different lyrics I guess. Well, probably just a matter of taste.

It was the B side of "Tuesday Morning", recorded at the same sessions, and added as a bonus track to the album in 2004 (UK) 2005 (Japan) and 2006 (USA).

I do like the song, stories like these makes it even more special! Offcourse you've made songs you 'think about'. For me, though, these are the cherry on the cake. You telling me (us) about it, makes it even more special. Making music is a creative proces. I really enjoy hearing this proces on an elpee!!
