Favorite song on Waiting For Herb

Post Wed Aug 22, 2007 5:23 pm

One of The Pogues most underrated albums, still contains moments of sheer brilliance. Here are my picks for top songs from the album

1. Haunting
2. Tuesday Morning
3. Modern World
4. Drunken Boat
5. Sitting On Top of the World
6. Once Upon a Time
7. Smell of Petroleum
8. Small Hours
9. The Girl From the Wadi Hammamat
10. Pachinko
11. Big City
12. My Baby's Gone

I agree it's a strong record. People who focused just on Shane's departure missed that at the time. "Once Upon A Time" is my favorite by a mile. Then "Tuesday Morning" and "Drunken Boat." I like a lot of the rest, too.

'sitting on top of the world' really loud in my car! 8) But as I start to think about it, I love the rest too. I played WftH so many times I can dream it.

I like all the songs on Waiting for Herb, but if I had to pick a favourite it would be Modern World.

Waiting for Herb

I'm not a big fan of this album but the best songs are:

Drunken Boat, Once Upon a Time and Girl from The Wadi Hammamat. Of the three id go Drunken Boat!
So you dropped a button in the plate and spewed up in the church...

Tuesday Morning
Girl from the Wadi Hammamat
Drunken Boat
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"

This album never really turned me on too much, but there were individual moments of brilliance. I do love "Sitting On Top of the World" and think it is one of the Pogues best (and most overlooked) songs. "Big City" and "Tuesday Morning" are undeniably strong too.

Listening to "Waiting for Herb" brings fond memories of a Scotland holiday in 1993, so I like it as a whole.

My favourite songs of "Herb" are "Tuesday morning", "Haunting" and "Drunken boat". My least favourites are "Modern world" (nice tune but the arrangement is a bit weak), "Girl from the Wadi Hammammat" (it´s like they said "we need another kind of `Turkish song´, something foreign etc.) and "Small hours" (it´s okay but nothing special).

* Tuesday AM
* Haunting
* Drunken boat
* My baby's gone

Big City and Modern World have potential too but I'm not a big fan of Michael Brook's producing work. The live version of Big City on the How Come-single proves the album version could have been much more intense.

My Baby's Gone has my vote

also

somewhat related, I found this on the 'Waiting for Herb' wikipedia entry. It's too wonderful not to share:

"Upon the album's release, there was some speculation that the "Herb" in the title referred to marijuana; however, according to Stacy it was from the name of a German pornographic cartoon character."

Quite so, as in "Herb is going into the Nature with Greta. Aluna and Marti are already there!"

You thought we were all innocent like. But we went through our share of Autobahn Porn and Schnapps just like any other band in 1985. 8)
