Billy Bragg used to do a spot in his live acts for his favourite mishearings of his lyrics. I always liked "a reggae band they called The Diggers" and "she's still got my donkey."

For quite a while I misheard a line in Oysterband's This Year, Next Year as "they guard their comfort like their garden gnomes" rather than "they guard their comfort like they're guarding gold." I mean, I knew it couldn't be right, but . . . :?

one of my favorites from memory is my grandmother thinking CCR's "Bad Moon On the Rise" was in reference to a nebulous "bathroom on the right"

A freind of mine sung

"If I should stumble, catch my phone" to Billy Idols Catch my fall.

Just wonder how he was thinking

And we did not catch the whale, brave boys
And we did not catch the whale"

There's a really awful song by Shania Twain which has a line towards the end which genuinely sounds like "I can't believe you kiss your cock at night", which would of course have been a better lyric than any of her own...

The one Pogues lyric I first misheard comes from Fiesta. Instead of the bit about the doll decapitation, I heard:

"..As he balls her, he does it laughing,
And Maraud-O, He throws his body in the sea!"

I still like the "As he balls her he does it laughing..." and I intend to use it in some bit of writing or something somewhere. It wouldn't really be stealing, would it?

For years I thought it was:

Transmetropolitan
In my eye!

Kinda makes sense, right?
it's a bit of a smooch-ah

Makes a lot more sense than many of them.

It does! I just thought of it like there was a reflection (literal or figurative) of "transmetropolitian" (whatever that was) in his eye. Seemed logical.

Much much more logical than most mishearings! Like all the hours i spent thinking, for some reason, that at the end of Rain Street the words "brain freeze" are sung repeatedly. Don't ask me why. I have no idea. Isnt brainfreeze what you get from eating icecream to quickly?
