Rum first, Hell's second, P&L third.

I also liked the cover to Jack's Heroes.

Speaking about singles, I cannot help liking Sally MacLennane picture disc. :)

I like Red Roses For Me because it´s such a low budget album cover. Andrew Ranken couldn´t make it to the photo shot so they put a small picture of him in the corner. :D

It has stark simplicity. The members of the band aren's striking silly poses, but have an air of calm authority about them, dressed in understated black, and staring into the camera lens. They're featured with their instruments - including accordian, whistle, and mandolin - showing this is no ordinary rock or pop band. Shane is leaning on a bodhran, showing the Irish strand. The bodhran is on a trunk...hinting at travel, featuring in tracks such as South Australia and Thousands are Sailing.

I agree 100%. That album is pure genius in every way.

I've always liked Peace & Love because the boxer reminds me of my father. But other than my own sentimentality, I like If I Should Fall From Grace With God. I've seen a couple of other bands try to imitate it also.

I always liked the subtlety of the six fingered boxer.

But my favorite is still IISFFGWG.

Just to clarify, his face reminds me of my father, not the six fingers! :D

The backround to the painting on 'Rum etc'. has been told in a new book -

Medusa: The Shipwreck, the Scandal, the Masterpiece
by Jonathan Miles

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/087113 ... ZR6GSWKHPT

(extract)

An iconic painting of the Romantic era, Le radeau de la Méduse, by Théodore Géricault (1791–1824), immortalized a French maritime disaster in 1816. Unpacking the visual power of the image, author Miles proves to be both an astute art historian and a dramatic chronicler of the catastrophe. Several people survived to record accounts; these ignited a political scandal in France as the royalist captain's incompetence and callousness stoked criticism of the restored Bourbon monarchy. Sensing an opportunity, Géricault faced the challenge of determining what moment of the survival drama to depict, for survivors' accounts contained discrepancies. He decided to omit riot, murder, and cannibalism and to include elements condemning Louis XVIII's regime, such as the accusing, outstretched arm of survivor Alexandre Corréard. Since Corréard's story changed in successive editions, Miles is wary about Corréard's factual fidelity, lending historical depth to the narrative without detracting from Miles' insights into the suffering and betrayal provoked by Géricault's morbid masterpiece. Relating its popular reception, along with the subsequent lives of artist and subject, Miles crafts a captivating gem about art's relation to history.

Funny, but I guess we really haven't discussed pogues artwork or album covers all that much yet!

I'm fond of the back picture of Red Roses where they all seem to be standing around in their dusters with bottles slightly hidden (same shot as the BFTCH single). I think I read somewhere that it was taken outside of a jail or something (?).

But my all time favorite pogues cover is definetly the shot taken aboard the HMS Belfast - - which was used on the record sleeve of Rum Sodomy (Stiff press.) and also as the cover of the French Dirty Old Town single. It's a black and white shot of the band taking a break all in their pirate gear aboard the boat in the Thames.

I spent a small fortune on a copy of this shot which was made into a poster on eBay a few years ago. For some reason it speaks to me better than all the others!

Yes, I'm quite fond of our talking posters myself. I especially like the ones that yell "Buy this fucking record or else, motherfucker!"

Fantastic, you can't beat a decent picture disc, why there hasn't been the CD equivalent I don't know - apart from the shape issue, why stick to the traditional round sticker?
