A friend left his Red Roses for Me LP at my apartment - it had to be pre 1986 because it was shortly before my son was born. Thus began the love affair.

Of course he was back to claim his album the next day.....

For me it was the video for "Waxie's Dargle" on German TV somewhere in 1985 iirc. Being a 13year old kid I had to rob my piggy bank to buy "Red Roses for Me" the very next day. Ach, fond childhood memories

I reckon I probably heard Fairytale before I learnt The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, not sure on that. I remember seeing Shane singing with Christy Moore on the Late Late Show, I was about 9 or 10.

Your first Pogues song was "Young Ned Of The Hill"! My God, I was in rehad from listening from the Pogues by then :-)
There used to be a radio show on CBC (Canada) called "Brave New Waves" in the 80's. That's where I first heard of the Pogues. We used to record it on cassette and listen to it over and over because there was some really good music there. We still have the tape dated May, 1985 with "Dark Streets of London" on it.

My first was Fairytale of New York, one xmas eve, or so. It was, I think, '88 or '89. Even looking back, I could've swore then, that it was an old song. It didn't occur to me until some time recently that it was relatively new when i first heard it.

Following that, the first recordning I purchased was Essential, so I think my second exposure was Sunny Side of the Street, or whatever the first track is.

Sunnyside of the Street, it was in a skate video I saw a few years back. Great song.

If I should Fall from Grace With God is the first I can remember, though I know I heard music from RSATL, but cannot remember it having a big impression. Once I heard IISFFGWG I was hooked.

Fairytale - I remember the first time I heard it too. Really glad I do, for it was the first song in a while that had given me a......feeling.

Well, the first Pogues CD I bought was the 2001 "Very Best Of..", so the first song I heard by the Pogues was "Dirty Old Town," because it was the first track on the disc.
