The Band Played Waltzing Matilda which one of my primary school teachers played for us, before teaching us the song. Still my favourite song of all time.

A music club and Hell's Ditch

Post Fri Jun 24, 2005 2:39 am

I picked Hell's Ditch as a bonus selection for one of those music club deals where you get 10 cassettes for the price of one if you promise to join the club and give them you two first born children ...

It was a combination of the title and the cover art that drew my unexpecting teenage eye. And by default Sunnyside of the Street was the first Pogues song I heard.

It still one of my favorites and that was more then a few years ago but, hey, I just wanna stay right here on the sunnyside of the street.

"Body of an American" was the first song I heard. I heard it on the television many, many years ago.
“An’ this is the last of Brummy,” he said, leaning on his spade and looking away over the tops of the ragged gums on the distant range.

young ned of the hill

Post Fri Jun 24, 2005 1:47 pm

three years ago, i had a great party at the end of the year. it was maybe 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning, some were drunk, and the it started, although most of the music we played was metal, from one moment to the othe someone, i still don't nkow eho, insertes peace and love and skipped to young ned of the hill. i remember, after we played that song twice, evryone dancing and shouting with friend 'may he burn in hell tonight' it was awsome. now i'm twenty and the pogues have become special to me, in pqarticular that song because of my interest in Irish history. you all must know that cromwell was a f*cking bastard

Like Lukeyboy (see pg 2) my initiation to the Pogues was via a TV program called 'The Tube' . Back in 1984 i was 15 and i'd rush home from school all buzzed-up about the prospect of the weekend , but before it could start i had to watch 'The Tube' - at the time the best music show on TVand still one of the best ever. Every week they'd have some amazing stuff on there ; The Cramps, The Smiths, Frankie Goes To Hollywood . Then one night i caught this rawcus , shit-kicking performance of a band with a guy banging what looked like a metal tray on his head. Subsequent replays of the video confirmed that it actually was a metal tray which only maked me love the band more. The following day me & a mate traipsed around town looking in all the record stores to find the track 'Waxies Dargle' by The Pogues (was someone having a laugh?), eventually we found 'Red roses for me' (on cassete!!) in W H Smith .We switched the price stickers from another cover - i'm sure the band would approve - and we got it down to a reasonable £2.99. I remember hearing 'Transmetropolitan' for the first time and how exhilerating it was , every time i hear the opening strains it has the same effect on me . Shit , i want to play it now.......

Sunnyside of the Street. I had been hearing good things aobut the Pogues, and wanted to hear them. I downloaded this tune and then proceded to purchase their albums. One of the smartest things I ever did...

A girl back in Detroit who I used to talk music with a lot told me there was this band I would love called the Pogues. So I went to the record store. But I guess I wasn't trusting enough, because I decided to buy the Poguetry in Motion EP instead of shelling out for an LP. First song I played was "London Girl"

As soon as I played 'Body of an American" I was on my way back to the store for more ....

I first heard the Pogues from a compilation tape made by a friend of mine. Can't remeber which song was first, but I remember "Worms" and "Lorca's Novena" were on it.

The first album I bought was "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash".
