While Hell's Ditch is more worldy affair that the pervious Pogue's records; this one is even viciously dismissed by MacGowan himself, it still is a wonderful album. The Pogues stretched their musical boundaries more adding Middle Eastern, Far East, and Spanish sounds to their mix, so that would explain the more relaxed air and wordly vibe.
MacGowan's originals, especially "Sayonara," "Summer In Siam," and "House of the Gods," drew on his experiences that he drew from spending a much needed holiday in Thailand. Hell's Ditch like Peace and Love, finds the band branching off and exploring more musical sounds, that would explain why some fans were confused. However, the end result of Hell's Ditch was still a much worthy effort.
