Yes, it took me a while to realise how good the song is. In fact, I've only just gotten around to adding it to my mp3 player!

Like much of Hell's Ditch, it rewards repeated plays.

I've been reading the forum for a while and was going to post about this song. Does anyone know if the intro is deliberate tip of the hat to You Still Believe in Me by The Beach Boys or is it mere coincidence?

Couldn't agree with you more mate imo it is a very underrated Pogues song.

Almost all the songs Shane wrote for Hell's Ditch drew on his inspirations while on holiday in Thailand, with the possible exception of Lorca's Novena, which drew on his affinity of Spain and the writings of Federico Garcia Lorca, and the title track, which has almost a Greek vibe to it.

I think the whole Hells Ditch album is a "summer" album, can't wait for the sun, the holidays, the music, the drinks.........

I've always thought that this song was under rated.

Hell's Ditch is, by some distance, the most interesting and enjoyable pastoral-punk album ever made. There is no intention of irony or smart aleckry. It is, as it stands, just a great Summer record. Contemporary (and subsequent) divisions over track-listings and suchlike have tended to obscure this fact a little.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. While Hell's Ditch does not have the best pogues songs on it (the first three do), it is (in my opnion) the best Pogues album.

It was a grower for me, after I bought it I listened to it a couple of times and then shelved it, but then a little while later I bunged it on the stereo while I was having a bath (unfortunate image I know) and suddenly thought, "BY Christ, this is a damn good album!" (or words to that effect, possibly).

It does get better with multiple lessons - the same can be said for numerous other great albums, IMO.
