Streams of whisky video

Post Sat Mar 17, 2007 10:29 pm

Looking for some material from the US shows I came upon a Streams of whisky video (as in music video) on YouTube.

"Last night as I slept", ___ The Band emerging from some kind of huge trash cans, Cait and James doing some serious attempts on break dance movements.

"I have cursed, bled and sworn
Jumped bail and landed up in jail
Life has often tried to stretch me
But the rope always went slack"

Brilliantly illustrated by Shane and Jem in "camping chairs" in shorts, really enjoying life, Spider banging his hed to a solid mountain wall.

All ending up in:

"Oh the words that he spoke
Seemed the wisest of philosophies
There was nothing ever gained
By a wet thing called a tear
When the world is too dark
And I need the light inside of me
I'll walk into a bar
And drink fifteen pints of beer"

In the video we see the whole of the band walk into a bar, (for sure looking for the light,) ending up with the entire bar / tables turned upside down, all people in there dancing happily around.

Just loved it, a Pogue session I love to see.

Anyone who knows when this video was shot and if its available anywhere in better quality than YouTube (From "Jtdrock" )can present.

Cheers, Jan

It was the first ever Pogues promo video, but did not appear in public until the release of the VHS collection Poguevision in 1990. This collection has recently been reissued in DVD format.

The video was filmed sround the King's Cross area, London, in 1983 or 1984 and is, in part, a pisstake on the then prevalent trends of the Pop and New Romantic bands to film their promos in exotic, sundrenched locations, in particular Wham's "Club Tropicana".

I dunno whether this has been discussed somewhere else before, but does anyone know why "Streams of whiskey" was chosen for a promotional video but "Dark streets of London" as the first single instead ?

Well, in truth "Streams" was made as a fun film project rather than as a "promo". If you listen closely you'll notice the soundtrack to "Streams" is an early demo version, not the Red Roses recording.

Is there anything as sexy as Shane sitting there in his red undies? I keep telling my wife I am going to find a pair just like those to spice up our sex life...

With those undies its rather a question how much spice can your wifetake I suppose.

Anyway, I love the scene with James doing his spectacular dance holding on to a fag in his mouth. Oh those 80's. :-)

Ah yes, I was talking to my pupils about that sort of thing today. After that I showed the Young Ones and they asked questions: "were the eighties really that weird?: I think I'll bring poguevision tomorrow to show the Streams clip and Brown eyes

Wait, are they all proper music videos, rather than live stuff?
