Top London song

Post Sat Mar 10, 2007 11:40 am

BBC London are running a poll on their website for the top song about London. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/. Scandalously, London You're a Lady isn't among the choices. IMO it's a much underrated Pogues song. The imagery conjured up by the lyrics is wonderful and the tune simply majestic. Email on its way to the bbc.

Ah London you're a lady
Laid out before my eyes
Your heart of gold it pulses
Between your scarred up thighs
Your eyes are full of sadness
Red busses skirt your hem
Your head-dress is a ring of lights
But I would not follow them
Your architects were madmen
Your builders sane but drunk
Among your faded jewels
Shine acid house and punk

You are a scarlet lady
Your streets run red with blood
Oh my darling they have used you
And covered you with mud
It was deep down in your womb my love
I drank my quart of sin
While chinamen played cards and draughts
And knocked back mickey finns

Your piss is like a river
Its scent is beer and gin
Your hell is in the summer
And you blossom in the spring
September is your purgatory
Christmas is your heaven
And when the stinking streets of summer
Are washed away by rain
At the dark end of a lonely street
That's where you lose your pain
'Tis then your eyes light up my love
And sparkle once again

neither lullaby of london is in the poll  and i really prefer lullaby of london
Then they'll take you to Cloughprior
Shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout
"Let's have another round!"

Neither would get more than a handfull of votes, Waterloo Sunset, will, of course, win this prize. Mainly on the grounds it sold a lot of copies.

London Calling is getting 40% at the moment, so there is hope yet. My vote would be for Transmetropolitan though.

I agree. London your a Lady is the best song about london by 9.6 miles. No offence to Mr Strummer.

I beg to differ - I think it's a marvellous song.

Though any and all of the Pogues' London songs knock spots off that and any other contender. Personally I'd vote for "Lullaby..." if only it were shortlisted. Though "London You're A Lady" would be close behind.

Ahem. 'Rainy Night In Soho' knocks ALL other Pogues songs about London in to touch. And I reckon 'London Girl' is under rated as well.

Second, I forgot about Rainy Night being about London! Yea that should surely be in the list.

I like all the other Pogues songs mentioned too. I just went for LYAL because it has "London" in the title and personal preference over Lullaby of London, which isn't as specifically about London itself.

I also think Rain Street is about London
