Well it is certainly an opinion thst the first tune in "Transmet" is "The Town I loved So Well", but it is not an opinion you hesr often from anyone with a passing knowledge of Paul Simon's "The Boxer".

Not exactly... "rat's piss" (as in "Transmetropolitan"), or "cat's piss", or "gnat's piss" (depending on where you are, all three are used) would be a common expression over here for cheap booze.

Valtoro's?

Post Wed Apr 09, 2008 10:41 am

Does anybody know there where abouts of Valtaro's (mentioned in TransMet)
I am down in London this weekend fancied a fried egg.
A quick google search throws up an italian trattoria called Val Taro's, but I don't think this is the place.

misheard lyrics

So did I--what a funny mistake! After numerous playings, the Yip-aye-aye, or however it is spelled, became clearer since I couldn't figure out how FYI made any sense.

Mondegreens are quite amusing. I saw one recently: "There's a bathroom on the right, " for "There's a bad moon on the rise."( Bad Moon Rising, Creedence Clearwater.

Maybe we should start a Pogues mondegreens thread.

Is there a thing of which it is said, "See, this is new"?
It has already been, in the ages before us…

Why to start it if it’s here already:

So all the posts regarding misheard lyrics has been moved there.

Hamish Imlach

Post Sun Oct 19, 2008 10:01 pm

In Transmetropolitan when MacGowan sings of 'VP wine and cider' is this a reference to/borrowed from Cod liver oil and orange juice OR is it the case that VP and cider is a well known combination and probably the mention of VP and cider appears in many songs the world over.

Many many thanks!

Shane knows! Any attempts by somebody else would be a mere speculation.
Could it be inspired by Cod Liver song? Quite possible, Hamish was kind of a star of Folk Revival and the song was kind of a hit (with special charm added by BBC ban).
On the other hand Shane penned his gem some 15 years later. And often Cod liver is sung with Lanliq instead of VP..
Lanliq (Langs Liqueur) and cider or VP and cider - both are symbols of cheap drinks affordable for every drinker, so it could be a pure coincidence, nothing else.

not too sure about VP wine ,but it is probably a cheap sweet sherry .Winos drink QC sherry and cider as it is cheap ,the sweetness of the sherry disguises the sharp acidic taste of cheap strong cider ,and the bubbles get you pissed quickly

VP wine was a sweet, full-bodied British wine, about the cheapest bottle of wine you could lay your hands on. Most common was the "rich ruby" variety, I reckon. It was, in my opinion, entirely horrible to drink but doubtless effective for its purpose. I don't think they make it any more. Supermarket own-brand British wine is probably the nearest equivalent nowadays.

There's a great, if slightly scary, 1950s ad for it here: http://www.historyworld.co.uk/advert.ph ... lcohol&l2=
