Brixton recordings Vs Studio recordings

Post Tue Feb 27, 2007 7:28 pm

What do you prefer? I think the whistling and accordion is much more prominent on the live ones, which I like in a way, but there seems to be almost no banjo. I'd say the studio recordings are better, however, the live version of IISFFGWG is truly immense, I can't listen to the studio one now, becasue it pales in comparison to the live one.

Hm, I often prefer studio ones as they´re recorded sometimes with more energy than live records (IISF... is imo an example - or White city - I am not aware of any White City as good as studio version), while they have more complex sound. Mostly I like to listen to both versions. Only example of song I like far more live is Young ned of the Hill - but I think live and studio versions are pretty different songs (both loved :-)). On the other hand, studio version of Young Ned dub is truly wonderful too.

On the other hand, I admire sound of Pogues live - so many instruments and it blends together very well - and of course it is mainly the band, but bad sound engineer could ruin it easily.

yeah...the bouzouki on the brixton cd is unbelievable !!! love this live recording because of the memories i have of that wonderful evening !!!

but usually i'd go for the studio ones and would prefer listening to the pogues playing live only when they are on stage and i'm in the audience !

I'd always think that I'd prefer to listen to studio recordings rather than live recordings on CD.

But The Pogues' Brixton CD is an exception (I can think of a couple of other non-Pogues exceptions too). It's a great recording, well worth the time and effort that was put into making sure it was right. And it's a brilliant mood-lifter, better than any drug, I reckon. :)

Thank you. And yes, Terry's bluesy playing on DOT is the business.

I have to say that I adore the Brixton version of Thousands are Sailing. It's one of my favourite songs anyway, and I'm not too sure who's singing, but it sounds even better than the studio version with Shane, if that's possible!

Ahhh..really? I figured it wasn't Mr Stacy, but I wasn't sure enough to guess beyond that.

Nice singing voice, Mr Chevron.

Very true. I just love the live intro to it so much.

That song is my top three favourite Pogues songs. The live version is unique because I don't I've ever heard someone sing with such a high pitched male voice like Philips before.
