White City video

Post Sat Feb 17, 2007 10:56 pm

Ive just watched the vid for white city on my Poguevision DVD and i noticed something odd about the accordion. You only see it for a second so i might be wrong but in the place where the grill above the keyboard should be on the accordion, is that entirely gaffa taped up or is it just my imagination?

Yes, I have noticed that too!

It looks like it was filmed from an outdoor gig. Could the gaffa tape be there to cover the mics from the wind

In those days, James had a microphone taped up to the front of the accordion with gaffer's tape. I think he's out of that phase now and got a special transducer installed inside.

I have indeed moved on from the gaffa tape. The White City video was filmed, if I remember rightly, at an outdoor festival on Pier Number Something in New York City, or around the time we played the outdoor festival, something like that. The trouble with accordions was that, is that the on-stage sound goes into the mikes and we though it'd be a good idea to try and insulate it - hence all the gaffa tape.

Now, things are different. There are several Sennheiser transducer mikes, I'm told, under the front grille and one or two in the bass end. Plus in-ears makes a bit of difference.

That was "Pier 84" my friend Mr. Fearnley and I was there (maybe not at the time of the video filming). It was right next to the Intrepid which is at Pier 86, somewhere around West 44th street in Manhattan. You had the Violent Femmes and Mojo Nixon there as well on that lovely summer evening. I must say that was one of the best sounding Pogues shows I heard in a long time.:D

Whoite Coity video

Post Thu May 17, 2007 7:08 pm

oi haven't got the fully video, saw it woithin' some documentary.. probably OIf oi should fall... but the point is thats one of the best made videos(in terms of oidea) for a song by The Pogues.. surely from me point of view :D heads of the members spoinning on those stoicks, graphoics' done groovy, covering fully the message of the music & lyrics, thats what oi call a match between a song and a video!

Philip, can we get some oinsoights in who suggested it to be made in such manner etc.

Great video and great song (One that proved that Peace and Love is the most underrated album of MacGowan-era Pogues). I love Shane's dancing!!!

Indeed, and one that is rewarding of repeat listens.

It's art, man, art I tell you. So I'm not the one to ask. Peter Dougherty, who also made "Fairytale Of New York", "If I Should Fall From Grace With God" and "Misty Morning Albert Bridge" filmed this one on one of the outdoor Piers on Manhattan. I don't really remember much about it, but I think I may be right in saying that Peter used the Cinematographer from the Woodstock movie, which is maybe where the art comes in. It is an elegant video. No nonsense.

Pier 84 I'm fairly sure, right next to the Intrepid. That was the concert which featured, along with the Pogues, Violent Femmes and Mojo Nixon on a hot summer evening around 1989 or 1990.

Yes, I hoped you'd come to my rescue, as I remember you posted this recently. Although in fact most of the video was shot that afternoon at the soundcheck, in daylight.
