Will the 2 live tracks from the 1986 interview disc be making it (Sally MacLennane & Dirty Old Town)?
I having trouble trying to get hold of these, they're not even on the Rarities & B-sides bootleg. :(

No. We couldn't find tapes and the sound on the interview disc was too grisly to dub. Besides, how many live versions of the same two tracks can one band release? "Self Aid" is not on there either.

Will the two tracks "Burning Lights" and Afro-Cuban-Be-Bop" appear on the box set. They apparently appeared on a bootleg CD of odds and ends from Joe Strummer's post-Clash recording career. The tracks are credited to "Joe Strummer & The Astro-Physicians". TERRY STAUNTON of UNCUT magazine states that the "Astro-Physicians was a one-off pseudonym used by The Pogues, and the two songs mentioned were recorded during the sessions for Hell's Ditch. I got to meet Spider last Saturday down in Brighton which was cool and he happend to mention that his favourite stuff off the box set were the instrumental tracks recorded around the time of the Hell's Ditch album.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, if any released songs aren't good enough quality or not worthy enough for the box set (single versions, live versions etc.) can't they be released as free MP3's on your website?
Maybe this will stop the bootleggers releasing and selling all the 'Rarities' CDR's (bought by people trying to track down the missing unreleased tracks!)
People could request what tracks they want and people could send them in if they have them (Phil C could put them on the website then :D )

Re: The post above (Astro Physicians). Were the pogues on the A-side of the single or just the B-side?

PS: Will 'Johnny Come Lately' be making it onto the box set? (single version/album version?)

Actually, we don't have an "official" website, given that Medusa does such an excellent job and saves us the trouble. I do believe that anyone who really wants to hear an mp3 of "Sally Maclennane" from the Mean Fiddler [the interview disc] or our live cover of "Darklands" or "White Light White Heat" or whatever, will find ways to track them down at another resource.

The Astro-Physicians played on "Afro-Cuban Be-Bop" only. It was in fact the b side, with Joe's solo "Burning Lights" on the a side. "Johnny Come Lately" appears twice - once in Steve Earle's album version and then in a "live" version sung by Spider.

Phil you better not make a horses arse of this. You don't have to include everything the band recorded. Two discs of the best unreleased is perfect. Some things are left on the cutting room floor for a reason.Shane should be final judge on anything released, not you.The later Pogues without Shane are an irrelelevance and if you put out everything you get your hands on you will destroy a great opportunity for more quality Pogues material.Rake at the gates of hell,NW3,Balinalee should all be on there if possible but who needs the 12" of Drunken boat or some such rubbish. It will tarnish the memory of a great band.Who needs inferior live recordings just because they exist? Like I said, maybe two discs of the best available would be great.Quality not quantity is what counts. The more useless stuff you put out the more expensive it will be.

You don´t have to buy it if you don´t want to. I think most of would buy a 10 cd box with rarities if it was released.

Thank you, Dermot, for your intelligent, insightful comments. I'm sure you speak for many of us here when you say that there is only one member of the Pogues who is worthy of deciding what material is released. Personally, I don't think any other band members have the right to even comment on the subject, let alone make any decisions. You're dead right, who wants to waste their money on loads of 'useless' Pogues tracks?

Great idea, and why not call them The Best Of The Pogues, vol 1&2?
Cover art would be easy, I'd like something with a dog and maybe a guitar to distinguish the different releases, I've found some likely candidates
here and here.

I for one don't want to hear anything 'new' and I wish Mr Magowan would sing a bit clearer.
I wish I'd done biology for an urge within me wanted to do it then

Hey dermot, piss off. What a downright simple-minded suggestion. Your opinions make about as much since as trying to play strip poker at a nudist colony. How dare you say that Shane should have the final say on what material is included on the disc, Philip is important part of the Pogues legacy, as is every single member of the band is.

Dermot just posted his opinion, arguable but harmless. Much more harmless than the reaction it caused. Twat, piss off, go home... Where’s your tolerance, people?

I reserve the right to make a "horse's arse" of anything I do, sorry Dermot. Naturally, in return, you reserve the right not to spend £29.99 on the results.
