Fascinating! :D

Are there any plans to publish a single to promote the box?

No previously released tracks except possibly "In and Out", "Got A Lotta Livin' To Do", "Haunted", that kinda thing. Stuff that did not directly relate to or connect with the 7 studio albums and Straight To Hell.

For the foreseeable future, the remastered CDs are the standard versions, so it is unlikely the bonus tracks will be collected together anytime soon.

Cool. 3 discs of unreleased stuff :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Don't think so. It seems we get by with just the one single these days. The same one every year.

"Christmas in New York?" I've heard that one. It's by the band with that guy with the bad teeth, right? What're they called ... The Sex Pistols? I heard their singer, Johnny Rotten, was called that 'cause of his teeth.

Yeah, but I reckon another one would go down a storm, especially with the increasing popularity of FToNY

Yes, that's them. Some of them drink, you know. That's why it's not them playing on their records, they're all too out of it to keep it together. I heard it was really Madness. A cousin of mine whose brother was once Belinda Carlisle's gardener [she's the one who sings the rude bits] told me.

Fully agree! Load it up. Put it all in there. I'd pay more to have it all in one place. I'd rather not have to buy another set with all the missing pieces in ten years.

Box-Set Question Redux

Post Wed Jan 31, 2007 11:43 pm

Thanks for the update, Phillip -- It's the best news I've heard in ages!!!!! I see while I was composing this post, you already partially answered my own inquiry; but I'd appreciate a bit more detail still, if you wouldn't mind ...

As the process for compiling the box-set is getting nearer to completion, I'd like to repeat an earlier question I had on the subject, if I may:

sectofone wrote:Mr. Chevron,

Can you please tell us what are the possibilities of the box-set including:

Live b-sides (Sally MacLennane; A Pair Of Brown Eyes; The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn; Maggie May; etc.)?

Extended mixes (If I Should Fall From Grace With God; Yeah,Yeah,Yeah,Yeah,Yeah; Whiskey In The Jar; etc.)?

Compilation & soundtrack appearances (Haunted; Junk Theme; Hot Dogs With Everything; Miss Otis Regrets/Just One of Those Things; Dirty Old Town (Live); The Good, The Bad And The Ugly; Got A Lot O'Livin' To Do; etc.)?

Basically, what are the chances of the box containing all the previously released material that didn't get added to the remastered editions (Or in the case of The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, strangely left off the expanded Straight to Hell edition: Straight to Hell Returns)?

We made a conscious decision to leave the live b sides off the remasters as they are from a different reality - not the recording studio. As for the box set, there is so much material to consider that I doubt the extended mixes are likely to make the cut. Subject to licensing agreements, the MCA, Chrysalis, NME etc recordings are more likely fodder, though not, probably, The Good The Bad And The Ugly.

As you are working on narrowing-down the track selection, I see the various "MCA, Chrysalis, NME etc recordings" are still being considered; But, is there very little possibility of the remix of IISFFGWG (featuring Kirsty's lovely added vocals), or the extended version of Whiskey In The Jar & others being added to the set? How about the live b-sides yet? Again, my fondest hope is that "all the previously released material that didn't get added to the remastered editions" will collected on the set.

(Then, as a companion piece to the remastered editions & the Straight to Hell Returns release, the box-set would allow the Pogues fan to own the (nearly) complete discography altogether!!!)

However, are the chances of this happening fairly slim or could this be an actual possibility?

Regards.

Inevitably, there's a Can Of Worms element. Where does one stop? "Young Ned" dubs, alternative single mixes? For every one of these, a genuine rarity gets pulled. I'd rather hear "Afro Cuban Be Bop" [Joe Strummer and the Astro-Physicians] from the Hell's Ditch sessions than "Hell's Ditch (Instrumental Version)". I have a personal dislike of live recordings, but that may just be me. Others in the band may feel differently.

The box set will never truly be complete if we are to make it reasonably playable. There is a strong case for including the vocal version of "The Rocky Road To Dublin" on the Red Roses For Me demos, but perhaps less of a case for a track from that session - "Sea Shanty", say - that is not an improvement on the eventual released version. The same criteria will apply to any BBC sessions we use. On the other hand, I will be presenting a case for the Abbey Road version of "Lullaby Of London" because it goes in a completely different direction to the IISFFGWG recording. Sometimes there is merit in hearing how a song developed, sometimes not. "FoNY" will provide a special problem. All three early recordings have something going for them but none of them have in their entirety, so we may do a composite or something, a trick the Beatles used on Anthology with varying degrees of success.

I fully understand that the band is loking for perfection or at least near perfection but I can say for myself that I don´t mind a rough sound or even some mis-playing or mis-singing.

I was pretty amazed when I heard little bits of an early recording the "Story of FoNY" and I would love to see them on the box set.

But if it's not able to put them on the set itself, why not publish an extended version of that one single a year featuring the early versions?

I can guarantee that there will be plenty of all three on some tracks.
