Peace & Love...Naked!

Post Tue Jan 23, 2007 9:58 am

While I was reading the new book, I was fascinated by the section on the recording of Peace & Love. With many of the the instruments being recorded separately and some criticizing the 'over-production' of the songs, it made me think I would love to hear a 'stripped down' version of the album. Along the lines of The Beatles 'Let It Be...Naked' where the Phil Spector production is removed leaving a back-to-basics album that more closely resembles the original sessions.

Now, I know nothing about record production and I realise this isn't going to happen, but I'm curious to know what everyone thinks.

Maybe we'll get some demos on the Treasure Chest?!

I always think a "stripped down" version shows how good a song really is. Sometimes a bigger production can hide bad songwriting. But if a song works just with guitar and vocals, it´s a great song.

Listening to Johnny Cash´s "American recordings I - V" led to this opinion, basically. Well, this and hearing Mr Chevron sing and play "Thousands are sailing" on the "Completely pogued"-video. :D What a wonderful version !

I am a big fan of the stripped down Beatles album, and would be intrigued to hear Peace and Love without the over-production.

Unlike many, I actually loved that album when it first came out. But the production work has dated it more than any of the other albums to the point where it is my 'least loved' Pogues album. To date I think that Hell's Ditch best captured the 'feel' of the Pogues on record (that is the full 'expanded drum kit and band member' Pogues as opposed to the 'minimilist standing in a staight line at the front of the stage' Pogues).

When reading the book, it was interesting to take in the views of the band members with regards to the production and over-dubbing. Especially Philip's comments regarding Blue Heaven. Maybe the tracks could be sent off to Brian Eno for mixing?

Peace and love is spot on for me. It would be interesting to hear it stripped down the same as it would be to hear red roses for me and rum sodomy and the lash ermm stripped up.

I certainly believe that over producing a song takes away from the true quality. I think that some of the best songs are recorded with little overdubs. Just basic.
