I can tell you with a good deal of confidence that the songs that will endure, based purely upon what the Internet asks this server for, are:

Fairytale of New York
And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda
Love You Til The End
Body of an American
Whiskey in the Jar
Dirty Old Town
Rainy Night in Soho
Whiskey You're the Devil
Sally Maclenane
Thousands are Sailing

Those are the ten most visited song pages on this site over the last three years, so it seems likely that those are the songs that will endure. Obviously some of them are just people looking for lyrics to a song they once heard (Whiskey You're the Devil comes to mind). Never the less, it's interesting to see what songs the Internets come to pogues.com to get information about.

But all of that aside - come on guys. Feel free to disagree, but stop with the "you're an arsehole" posts. Once or twice is heat of the moment point making. Repeating it is just being a belligerent thug. Play nicely in the sandbox or don't play at all. Thanks.

Damn you and your science. Surprised Fiesta's not on there. I maintain it's the tune I hear most out in the real world. Weddings, Birthdays etc., The DJ always plays Fiesta. Maybe it's just drunken Mancs who like that one.

I suspect LYTTE got a wee push from girls that heard it when they saw that fillum. Mind you BOAA probably got some help from The Wire. :D

I think this has been a very interesting thread. I am sorry about the arseholes.

Fiesta also gets many an airing on sporting occasions these days. Over the PA post-goal-scoring/try-scoring/boundary-hitting or whatever. Though never the lyrics, so I guess that wouldn't give people the urge to look them up on fair Medusa.

I suspect many people do not know Fiesta is a Pogues song. It'-s just that\ thing that goes "_da dA da da......."_

I had a similar relationship with Los Palmas Seven by Madness for a long time.

Kind of confirms what I've been saying all along, doesn't it, to a degree ? That people know the Pogues for something other than Spanish carnival music ? I would say their most known songs are FONY and The Irish rover with Body of an American close behind because of it's association now with The Wire. Also their Dirty old town is now almost the definitive, in Ireland anyway, I would say.The common thread is a kind of Irish music and what the public associated the band with.
One of the starstruck bed wetters on here said something about it " being absurd to argue with a member of the band ". I'd just like to point out that Phil WASN'T a member of the band at the time in question. So even if there was something to their stupid logic, in this case it wouldn't apply !! But the fact remains, I don't have to be in the Wailers to know Bob Marley played reggae. I have a pair of ears.

Right Marley played reggae, however "what was the original idea of Bob Marley's music?" I mean most connoisseurs of Jamaican music would argue that the style known as Reggae did not appear until the end of the 60's and Marley began his recording career in the mid 60's... of course my stupid logic could be influenced by my starstruck bed wetting.

You are, of course, absolutely right. Bob Marley & the Wailers played reggae. The didn't lead the evolution of reggae from ska and rocksteady. No way, they played reggae right from the off. And of course, ska didn't evolve from a combination of calypso, mento and US R&B influences. I must have cloth ears

So Phil wasnt in the band right from the off but he was still around the band and I think im right in saying producing one of the b sides wich wouldnt have been long after Red Roses. He was part of the scene from the begining but your right, the fact that he was or wasnt in the band doesnt make him automatically right. The fact that he is right makes him right in my opinion,

clever answer, funny discussion....i´m sure dsweeney would agree with you. music is always influenced by other music and so on and so on....but bob played reggae right? influenced by styles like ska, calypso ect. right?....it´s the same with the pogues...or not? at the beginning they played music "mainly" influenced by irish folk and punk. very simple. thx. or would you argue that influences like country, ska or rock´n´roll take the same place in their music? i´m afraid some people here divide between influences in mind, music you loved as a teenager, music that opened your mind...and influences that are obviously hearable in the musical output....both things are very important. the question is what we are talking about here. does dsweeney mean the same like richb or phil? if not, then shake hands and open another thread.....though...it´s too entertaining....

Re-reading Carol Clerk´s "Kiss my arse" I stumbled upon a quote by Mr Jem Finer:

"(...) We weren´t a traditional Irish band, and to a large extent, we had reinvented a way of playing Irish folk songs, but we also had a very distinctive style that was going in different directions too, absorbing all manner of influences."

I believe that´s what most people on this forum or at least in this thread were saying. And even if Mr Chevron wasn´t in the band right from the start, Mr Finer certainly was, so he should definitely know, IMHO.

Recorded around the time of 'Rum Sodomy & The Lash, i.e. their 2nd album. I can hear nothing in it except pure Irish folk...

But am I right in saying that this is a piss take?? Also im sure if I remember rightly there is some rock n roll in there ha ha. In relation to Jems comments I think this sums it up. I think think the mistake is that nobody is saying that irish folk etc etc was not a large part of what the pogues were doing just that there are other influences coming into the music. Its funny because when I got into the Pogues at sixteen (1987) I never thought of them as an irish folk band just a bloody good band and long may it continue
