It's bonus track on Red Roses, i.e. single version (Dark Streets/Waltzing Mathilda single, 1984)

Besides, the Red Roses version is way shorter, for it only has half of the verses.

Mathilda without the brass

Post Mon Jan 22, 2007 11:30 pm

Do the Pogues have a version of Waltzing Mathilda without the trumpets, brass, horns or whatever it is ?

If so where so, please.

Thanks

S.

For that matter...why was Rainy Night In Soho a bonus on Hell's Ditch?

They remixed it for a single that they released at the end of the 80s or the beginning of the 90s. I don't remember which single that was though.

There is more info about the different versions of the song in the Official Music FAQ.

The original Poguetry In Motion EP came out in early 1986 and was produced by Elvis Costello. The 1991 version [on the reissued Poguetry EP and as a single A side in its own right] was produced by Steve Lilliywhite and contains various elements from the original recording as well as several new parts. I can no longer remember which parts are from 1986 and which are from 1991, though I daresay Medusans with acute ears may be able to figure it out. Kirsty's backing vocal was new, obviously.

How did it come that Steve Lillywhite and the Pogues worked together again after Joe Strummer produced "Hell´s ditch" in 1990 ? Or was "Rainy night in Soho" recorded in 1989 and just released it 1991 ?

It was a one-off job, an attempt by Mr Warners to find a "new" hit single to go with The Best of The Pogues, I think.

There is definitely a difference between the two versions, I have the 1986 EP version and I can here it. quite clearly.

You can hear a clearer guitar in the new version, and it has less banjo on it
