As usual I'm coming a bit late to the discussion, but to further the Pogues/Ade Edmondson (via Kirsty MacColl) connection, it's worth noting that he also appeared in the video for Kirsty's early single "Terry." He plays her nerdy suitor (and quite convincingly, I think). Definitely worth a look as it's pretty amusing stuff, Our Kirst looks gorgeous, and "Terry" is one of the best pop songs she ever wrote (and second only to "They Don't Know" among the highlights of girl-group-style Kirsty in my opinion). If there were any justice in the world, it would've been a huge hit, but then you could say that about all her singles. (The fact that every man, woman, and child on earth doesn't know all the words to "Caroline" is one of the great travesties of the past 20 years.)

Anyway, hopefully this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u12d0dnN0p8 will work, but if not, go to YouTube and search for "Kirsty MacColl Terry" and you should find it.

You have to love a song that rhymes "smarty" with "karate" and gets away with it. :D

Speaking of the video Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, didn't Ade fill in for James on the accordion? It didn't look like James there - I thought it might have been Ade.

I know I'm about 3 years late into this thread, but the lines you're looking for are something about molesting a young girl from Grenada...

Spider told me once what they were but I was drunk and forgot. They're not too flattering anyway...

On further listening:

You must forgive him senor Fearnley
He doesn't dance like the British do
He has defiled a young girl from Grenada
He has encountered on the emplacada

Then again, I have been wrong before...

Sounds like 'He doesn''t dance like the British navy'. But the rest seems to work.

I found the translation a while ago, though it was from some dodgy looking lyrics site. I can't remember it exactly but it was where I learn't my only bit of spanish - nos vompere mes calliones (excuse spelling mistakes) - 'don't break my balls'. I also heard it was a mix of spanish and italian. Have i heard lies?

Actually, I think that's "he does the dance of the British Navy"

I feel obliged to point out that "Fiesta" is not written in any language formally acknowledged by the academies of the United Kingdom or Spain. He just made it up, though some of it is, doubtless, based on some old phrase book or lexicon.

Well I knew if I got close, that someone more knowledgeable than I would fill in the gaps! :wink:

Six long years of Spanish lessons and Fiesta still confounds me.

If its made up I'd still love to learn it! After learning Irish that is. In the immortal words of Ronnie Drew;

"There was a suggestion made last year that all the books by Irish authors that are banned in this country should be printed in Irish. And this would be a great incentive for the Irish people to learn their own language."
