Irish band in the USA

Post Fri Jul 28, 2006 10:06 pm

I am also trying to do the same thing, although I quite like Flogging Molly. I suggest subverting some bluegrass musicians. There are bluegrass people scattered all around, and they play the same instruments often very well. The key is to try to explain what makes irish music irish and not bluegrass. It's in the lilt, the stretching of some beats and the contracting of others. Bluegrass musicians need to be removed from contaminating bluegrass and country music sounds and educated with mass doses of Pogues, but it can be done.

Welcome to the scrum, Sam's Cross - An Englishman in Oregon, eh? Great comments too, by the way. Mind you, I'd not consider bluegrass a contaminating influence, really, but it's great advice for Revsta. :)

Bluegrass is a lovely genre, my wife is a huge fan and there's a great bluegrass group in Portland called Jackstraw. However, it is really frustrating trying to sing A Pair of Brown Eyes when the rest of the band is playing it like a bluegrass tune.

This would be so. I encounter the same phenomenon at a local flok club session I attend. Most of the musos are into Aussie Bush music or folk or country, and sometimes the cross-cultural musical influences can be a tad confusing rhytmically. Sometimes, though, it's sheer heaven. :)
