My thoughts exactly, it's really great to get such an insight into how these great songs came about :P

if i should fall from grace with god is my favourite pogues song aswell(apart from fairytale of new york of course)
the intro riff is cool i figured out how it goes on my guitar and play i play it every time i pick it up. cant work out how the second bit of the solo goes though.. bit too fast for me.

dawson: Which part exactly (you can give me minutage on official version release)? I can play it (hopefully) whole on the guitar - but like fingerpicking, not backing guitar.

And to If I should fall is connected one story with me and my unce (he loves the Pogues too) - I always wanted to try accordion (reason is obvious I think) and he has one. I learnt some rather basic melodies from If I should fall and white city on piano and when I came to him, I tried the accordion. My uncle said: Hell, if I figured the riff for IISFFGWG. I took the accordion and clearly played it. He was sort of surprised 8)

Yes, if you give me minutage, I will tell you the melody (that´s what I play basically).

Lullaby is nice indeed. And I like Maidrin Rua too - it seems like written for guitar :-) But so many tunes sound good on guitar - Parting Glass, Young Ned of the Hill, Cotton fields, Pistol for Paddy garcia...too many of them :-)

On accordion, the note pattern for Fall From Grace is as followed:

G A G F#, E F# E C#, B C# B A C# B

Then of course back up in the reverse pattern sort of. I can ALMOST play it along with the song without any mistakes.

He's still alive!!!! Glad you're still with us Caukill. Now find somewhere cool, preferably underground and drink nothing but water, bottled, spring, and not French. And take a shower. You smell like fish.

I was nowhere NEAR him. I think that's Belgium you can smell. Or possibly some of your secret stash of Venezuelan beaver-cheese. 8)

Even though I'm not a musician, this was a fascinating thread to read, so thanks Philip for giving such insight into the creation of one of my all-time favorite songs. (And to revsta for asking the question in the first place).

Thanks too to Philip for the bit about "Just One Of Those Things" -- another of my favorites! Coupled with "Miss Otis Regrets" it's tough to beat, and I think it's one (i.e. two smashed together) of the most entertaining tracks the Pogues ever recorded, and "Miss Otis" is certainly one of Kirsty's finest performances.

The video's well worth seeing, too!
