Peace and Love Multi tracked vocals

Post Fri Apr 07, 2006 9:48 pm

One thing that initially turned me off of this album, but now makes me dig it, was that about half the songs have multi lead vocals, they sound like two or more people are singing, (which they probably are) and it gives the songs a unique sound. Cottonfields, Blue Heaven, Down all The Days, USA, Lorelai, Night Train To Lorca, Train of Love... these all have multi lead vocals, whereas every other pogues album pretty much just has one lead track, possibly switching off between two vocalists (like Waxie's Dargle, FONY) or multi lead vocals during the chorus, but not all through the song like those listed above... I wonder if the Pogues were trying something new or if it's just a coincidence that so many songs were done this way for this album.

Shane's vocals were mostly pretty weak, despite Lillywhite's best efforts. He was forced to disguise this by doubling up the vocal on various tracks with me or Andrew or Spider. Then it sort of became the sound of the album, so we did it with the other tracks too.

By the way, Steve now considers this a mistake and feels he should have left Shane's feeble vocals exposed but honest. I tend to agree with him.

Wow, that is some good insight, thanks Mr. Chevron... I always wondered what the story behind that was... A few years ago the Beatles released a version of Let It Be that was 'deSpectorized' where they removed the awful Phil Spector drowned production and gave the album a more favorable (at least by the surviving band members) sound. Perhaps something like this could be done with some of those tracks in the future... (a less drastic way of dealing with it, as the album Peace and Love IMHO is far better than Let It Be, with multi vocals or not :)

Mr. C is always forthcoming with the good oil on background Poguesiana...

The Beatles album in question is 'Let It Be...Naked' ( 2003 The Beatles). I didn't like it as much as the original release, but hey, to each their own!

It's quite hard to belive that Shane's having a weak and feeble voice...
But I think that goes for the later albums only.
