Billy's Bones

Post Wed Mar 29, 2006 4:43 pm

Billy's Bones to me is one of the most underrated songs of the entire Pogues back catalogue. I think it one the stand out tracks on Rum, Sodomy and the Lash. My only complaint, it that is to short, I always felt that a little instrumental bit should have been added at the end, in fact I have heard that James Fearnley wanted to do so, originally in the studio.

Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Yes, I have read what James Fearnley tried to do with the end of the song, however, it still is a great song regardless. As before, one of The Pogues most underrated songs, along with Transmetropolitan, Sea Shanty, and Sit Down By the Fire

I'm not sure about Sea Shanty but agree about the others. What about the great lost classic that is Down In The Ground Where The Dead Men Go? Lyrically brilliant and musically adventurous- I love that song so much. It was a great idea to take the famine (with lyrics like "four million people starved to death/ could smell the curse on their dying breath") and then skillfully link it to modern London (e.g."Been drunk as a skunk since I've been home/From bar to bar like a ghost I roamed/I can't forget those things I saw/Been down with the devil in the Dalling Road")

Every single song from Rum, Sodomy.. to Fall From Grace is a classic. Billy's one I always go back to.

Anybody think there is a connection between this song and the "Bill Bones" referenced in a couple Libertine's songs. I'd like to think so but I've no idea.

Bill Bones is a pirate captain sort in R.L. Stevenson's novel Treasure Island. Which could be the source of the name in the Libs' song. But no connection with Billy, as far as I know.

Ah, "the black spot"! I love that book.

And I also love Billy's Bones, definitely underrated vocals, and amazing to think it would end with Abide With Me, could have been most fitting.
