Has/Will There Ever Be Pogues Recordings Of...

Post Sat Mar 25, 2006 11:26 pm

Fields Of Athenry
Wild Rover

I know there's a version of Wild Rover with Shane and some French (i think) guy... it's okay at best though...

So yeah, have The Pogues ever made a recording of either of these songs? If not, then why? I only ask because they're two of the most popular Irish songs, so there's probably an explanation :P (ie: you don't like em).

Yes, The Pogues did record a version of The Wild Rover, you can find it on the new remastered Red Roses For Me, love the beer bottles standing in for the drum, you'll know what I'm talking about when you hear it.

I was just abotu to buy the CD of IISFFGWG, would you recommend any others over that? I already have Hell's Ditch and RS&TL, and both 'greatest hits'.

I have the remastered Red Roses for Me TOSCS - I would definitely recommend purchasing it on CD. Personally I reckon it has the best bonus tracks out of any of the remastered ones (not too say that the others aren't good though) and the sound is a lot better than the original issue. I paid $35 Australian for it (only available on import here) and after listening to it (I already had the original RRFM) I didn't feel ripped off.

I agree that Red Roses has the best bonus tracks, though all the albums are well worth getting.

I agree whole-heartedly cobber. I bought all the albums in their re-mastered forms recently (all 7 studio albums anyway) to replace lost, scratched and otherwise missing old copies, and to hear those albums that were an embarrassing 'black hole  ' in my Poguesiana (to whit, 'R.R.F.M' and 'Waiting For Herb' and 'Pogue Mahone').

I think ALL the bonus tracks are just that - BONUS! - but the stand-out all-time get-me-another-pint-love-I'm-staying ripsnorters fer me would have to be: "And The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda'(fer obvious reasons - and I once sand it in front of Eric Bogle *sweat*) and "Whiskey Yer The Divil" (which I love to pieces so much ...well, you see....you'll ALLL seee......).

Being fairly new to this forum I'm having a trawl through some old posts.
I've got all my Pogues stuff back in the old country (currently living in Brisbane) but have a stack of mp3s to get me through. Anyway, do the reissues got anything new or just b-sides and bonus tracks from 12" and EPs?

They are all previously released B sides except an alternate version of Love You Till The End on Pogue Mahone.

I'm kind of bummed that "Rake at the Gates of Hell" wasn't included as a bonus track on any of the remastered albums.

It's on the CD Straight To Hell Returns (Big Beat/Ace) which contains all the soundtrack music from Straight To Hell by Joe Strummer, Pray For Rain, Elvis Costello and Zander Schloss as well as The Pogues.
