Cait O'Riordan vs. Darryl Hunt

Post Tue Feb 14, 2006 4:44 pm

Who do you guys feel the Pogues best bassist was. I like Darryl, he wrote some pretty good tunes on Waiting For Herb, like Big City and Modern World, but I've always had a soft spot for dear old "Rocky," Cait O'Riordan. Plus her rendition of "I'm a Man You Don't Meet Everyday," is just beautiful.

Cait any day. Pogues lost something very special to the live set when she left and Andrew sat down to play drums

Darryl never "ran off" with a love interest. He is a professional. If you like Cait better try listening to If I Should Fall From Grace... without any bass. Not so good huh?

I prefer Cait simply because she added a lot with her vocals not just her lead vocals. Her background vocals added a lot to a song, for example her beautiful background vocals on A Pair of Brown Eyes during the chorus. However, Daryl in my opinion is a much better bass player and i'll give a nod to his beautiful so Love You Till The End as well. Great song.

I think Darryl is best. Cait is a great singer but an average bass player. Darryl, on the other hand, is a great bass player who has written some good songs (although his best compositions are on the Bish CD). Where I think Darryl is most underrated is in the quality of his backing vocals which have made a huge difference to many Pogues songs. For example, listen to House Of The Gods and imagine what it would sound like without Darryl's backing vocals.

I think their playing was each totally different - I think it had to be. The majority of songs on Red Roses and Rum required a quick, three-chorded, repetitve playing (or plucking). Fall From Grace required a bit of that but some more aggressive and liberal playing. I think it would be hard to compare the playing of Ranken on Red Roses with that of the drumming on Peace & Love or Hell's Ditch - two totally different methods, almost two different musicians. As for bass, both players seemed to fit the needs of the records. Therefore, I think there is now way for me to compare them.

hands down Daryl is an amazing well accomplished bassist, Cait was average, at times below... but as far as who I'd rather look at... definatly Cait! But in all honesty, I think things worked out well, with cait on the first two albums, and daryl on the rest, as it's hard to imagine those albums without them respectively. Nevetr seen them live in any combination with the exception of videos, so not sure who added most to the live mix.

Cait vs Darryl? My money'd be on Rocky, I bet she's got a mean right hook. Bass playing wise, they're chalk and cheese - to me Cait plays in a more folky, 'Irish' style in keeping with the first 2 albums, whereas Darryl has a harder, more 'rock' style, suiting the direction the band later went in. Both great backing vocalists too, and great to see them both together on stage in Dec '04.

Not really sure, my grandmother would know about that better than I would, but I do know that I'm fourth-generation Irish, and about third-generation Irish-American.

My grandfather is the only one who doesn't know where in Ireland, his ancestors and relatives came from, but he is about fifth generation Irish, my grandmother is more closer to Ireland than my grandfather

I won't even try to compare the two, but I have to say that the bass work on "White City" always knocks me out. Really there's nothing about that track I don't love, but the bass is one of the highlights for me.
