I would only add that there is no running order in which "Pepper" amounts to anything more than an adequate Beatles album, though I often think that things might have been different if "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" had been included instead of, say, "Good Morning" or "Lovely Rita".

My dad and I got into an ... umm ... "discussion" a year or two ago about this very thing. My position - It's an OK album that, for historical reasons, means a lot more to people than much better albums do. In particular songs like Good Morning dragged the whole thing down.

His position - That album changed the landscape of pop music and pushed the field of studio recording to new areas, AND that Good Morning was a riff (or a piss-take, if you will) on a breakfast serial jingle that was immediately recognizable to an entire generation.

Ultimately the discussion ended with us mutually agreeing that the other one was an idiot and my dialing up some Gil-Goa trance crap on the iPod just to annoy him.

I like good morning and lovely rita. They're catchy.

hello I'm new to this forum. I'm a Pogues fan since nearly 2 years now (I'm only 18). It startet during the last day of an exchange to England, on the way to the plane which should fly me back home. There was a Best-Of-Album in the car from a band which I'd never heard of before. I put it on and heard The Pogues for the first time of my life. Thank God I did it! Now I own the first five albums, the box set, a biography, a live DVD (T&C) and some more DVDs and a book about Shane MacGowan as well.

Coming back to this topic, I really like all five albums from "Red Roses" to "Hells Ditch". In the Pogues biography it is said that on "Hells Ditch" the Pogues sort of drifted away from their original idea, mixing Irish Music (traditional) with punk influences. But I think "Hells Ditch" still sounds a lot like the Pogues, with new influences from Thailand mainly. It is brilliant, as well as the underrated "Peace and Love". What I prefer on those late albums is the musical development. "Red Roses for me" is great as well, but it is very simple and captures the band during a period when they were still learning to play their instruments. The later albums sound "bigger" and "fuller". I like the changing of Shane MacGowan's voice as well, on the first two albums he sounds so "clear" and young, on "Hells Ditch", and on his solo projects without the Pogues he sounds very raw, but still great! The only song that I really detest from him is his version of "My Way" (on youtube), but that's another topic. Excuse my bad english, I'm from Germany

Gotta say that on this topic, my favourite Pogues album is Red Roses For Me. The reason being I like the rawness of it, especially Waxie's Dargle, Boys From the County Heel, Sea Shanty, and Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go. This was the first Pogues album I bought shortly after it came out, and it was a thunderous jolt for me, a bit like when I bought my first Fall album. On odd occasions, Red Roses For Me can still raise goose pimples on my arms!.

Wow. Hard to pick a favorite since they are all so good, but if I could only own one Album it would probably be Rum, Sodomy & the Lash.

I've only read this page..can't be arsed trawling through it all..so I don't know how the beatles got dragged into it..I was a kid in the 60s and love most of their stuff..sarge pepper is superb..in my top five albums..

in my mind (band from county hell)
obv with rum sodomy and the lash/grace with god constantly swapping places with red roses..depends on my MOOD..
also a special mention for crock of gold..love it.

I like the first album Red Roses.I never heard this kind of music before.The album is was changing my life.

Don't own Waiting For Herb or Pogue Mahone. Getting around to it.

They are all great in their own individual ways, but for me the ultimate classic is If I Should Fall From Grace Wtih God. At one time or another just about every song on there has been my favourite Pogues song.
