"In And Out" Question

Post Tue Feb 07, 2006 1:30 am

Hello,

I have the Garbo soundtrack (two tracks promo) that contains "In And Out" by the Pogues.

I've always found this song to be underrated... it's really a great song.

I was just wondering who wrote it? and what year? (there's no mention in my booklet).

It sure looks like Shane Macgowan style... but I'd like a confirmation.

Here's the lyric by the way:
Saint-Tropez in the golden days of the gorgeous Brigitte Bardot
Heaven's night is burning bright at the gates of El Dorado
Tasted sin among the bins down at Alvorado
Melbourne's sweet, the sunny streets, the beauty of the garbo

In and Out
Catch me if you can
All the lovely sheilas love the garbo man

By the crack of dawn, as the day is born and the world is all aslumber
And amidst the dreams and unborn schemes and the rolls of distant thunder
If you should stir, you'll hear a word that will fill your heart with wonder
As the garbo trucks take away the muck of last night's puke and chunder

Follow me among the shit me boys stinking all and rough
They'll never dump anything useful but they surely dump enough
I got me in the wagon boys a couple of tins last night
But now I'm on the truck once more, I'm head to toe in shite
I'm shitfaced and I'm stoned, I want to be alone
But all the lovely Sheilas love a garbo man...

Thanks!

The track "In and Out," was indeed written by none other that Shane MacGowan. I'm pretty sure it came out at the tail end of Shane's relationship with The Pogues.

According to the booklet for the Garbo soundtrack album, "In and Out" was written (and produced) by The Pogues. What makes you think it was written by Shane?

The track was recorded round about July 1991, when Danny (Pope) Heatley was deputising for Andrew on drums. Danny plays on the track, but apparently Mr Chevron doesn't.
Bono: "Every time I click my fingers a child dies."
Audience member: "Stop fucking doing it then!"

Nothing to do with me, as Kilmichael points out. The credits on both the CD and CD Single do indeed say "Written by The Pogues" which may be the only incidence of this credit. I was always under the impression that at least Jem had something to do with the writing of this.......

Well, Mr. Chevron you would know more about that I would considering you were in the band. I've just read on other sources that Shane did write the song.

Congratulation on your Lifetime Achievement Award, you all deserve it. March 11, is coming real soon, can't wait for the show

I always heard this as "I got me end away me boys a couple of times last night" and I have listened to it a thousand or two times.
I know it's not what any of the lyrics sites say but I like my version better.

Great song mate. Just 1 correction - the line As the garbo trucks take away the muck of last night's puke and chunder is As the garbo truck tips me in the much of last night's puke and chunder. Cheers.

I love the song. The lyrics are brilliant, especially "I'm shitfaced and I'm stoned, I want to be alone ".

I think Garbo man is among the best songs about Garbagemen

There's another one though: "The Garbageman can" from that Simpsons-episode featuring U2.

It's a shame that the Pogues never guest starred on the Simpsons.

Yeah, I remember that episode...

But nonetheless it's a shame that the rest of you never appeared on the show.

Dear producers of the Simpsons: If you should read in this Forum - please contact the Pogues and ask them to gueststar in your show! 8)

Could work out well, but I fear it would end up being a two minute belching contest between Shane and Barney. :(
