Rake at the Gates of Hell

Can anyone tell me whether "rake at the gates of hell" ever got to the test press stage? I remember Janice Long playing it as the next Pogues single and it being listed in a catalogue but have never seen a copy or heard of it for sale.

You can find "Rake At The Gates Of Hell" on the Straight To Hell soundtrack.

I know that. At the time the soundtrack originally came out the track was going to be released as a single (possibly with "if I should fall from grace with god" as the b-side). It was played on the radio as such but I've never seen a real live copy anywhere. I've seen it listed in a catalogue with cat no HELL 1.

Isn't this a great song? It's got the same melody as Shane's Aisling, but the lyrics are totally different. It should have been given wider exposure, maybe a place on one of the studio albums.

I was wondering who the "they" he seems so angry at?

Shane gave this explanation: "The whole idea of 'Rake At The Gates Of Hell' is very violent and romantic. It's the sort of thing that your classic maniac gunslinger would be thinking, about anybody who'd ever done anything to them, as they were waiting to go. It's inspired by Marty Robbins, you know, doom and death in the hot sun."
But I guess it is open to endless interpretations.

The song sounds fucking fantastic at the end of Straight To Hell. Desert music man.It never sounds as good without the film for some reason.

aswell as the verses sounding like Aisling , thwe instrumental bits are like Mother Mo Chroi

this is also one of my favourite pogues tunes, much over-looked.

shane & the popes did a new version, b-side to somethin' or other (and i think it's on the rare 'ole stuff collection too), but i much prefer the original. the new one is heavy on the guitar, whereas the original is all about the banjo & accordion.

funny you mention "aisling"... i catch my self singing it to the tune of "rake..." all the time. thought that was just me.

On what album was this recorded? I know it is on Shane and the Popes' Rare Oul' Stuff but I was surprised to see that it was a Pogues song. I didn't manage to find on which album/EP the Pogues recorded this. Anybody can help? I think this song is great, does anybody agree?

I did a sculpture infulenced by this song called "Judgement Dogs: Last Chance at the Gates of Hell". It got some expose last year and has made it into another show opening next week. Not thant many people get it though...whatever.

Rake at the gates of hell is another one of my Pogues favourites, would be class if that song will be played during the christmas tour, would love to see that one live :!:
