For what its worth, long ago I listened to Hell's Ditch after deciding that Peace and Love was evidence that the Pogues were going down a path I was not interested in. I was pre-judging Hell's Ditch based on my love of the first three, and expecting the Pogues to crank out another like them. Only recently have I gone back and given them a fresh listen and I now love Hell's Ditch.

There is probably a large fan base who only know a few Pogues songs off the top of their head, who can rattle off 20 of their favorite titles from Flogging Murphy or the Dropkick Molleys, who would buy and love new material. Die hard fans are always big supporters, but we're probably overly critical as well. The Pogues are the Dubliners of the new generation of progressive Celtic music.

Hey Eric!

Pogues have taken up where the dubliners have left off!

Sounds like a relay race!!

but my original point was would fans be disappointed with a Peace and Love style follow up to what has gone before or leave the legacy as it is?

( i quite like P&L mind! )

I like some of P&L. I haven't gone back to it like I have with Hell's Ditch. And yea, I remember posting some of my "black and white" jerkoff opinions here about new material, on another thread on the subject, but my point there was this: if the Pogues record new material, then let it be new material, and not a bunch of covers. I think these guys, individually and collectively, have so much talent that they could not possibly put out a bad record at this point..... if they wanted to. Time has a way of focusing us on what is important. But what do I know!

(I deleted the equally long segment I just wrote for fear of getting an Overton in my eye)

Then maybe you should, I usually prefer Hell's Ditch but I listen to P&L lots.

I know that an album of new material would be frought with difficulties of various kinds but I'd sure as hell buy it. :)

And in my opinion Shane still sings like a God

"would all of that suffer if a poor collection of songs was released? "

Give them some credit! The quality control within the Pogues (as evidenced in the approach to their live shows) is such that they wouldn't let a poor record slip out. Too much experience now and talent.

Interesting that you should pick 3 of Shane's best songs and compare them to 3 not so great songs by other members. What about the group that wrote Young Ned of the Hill, Curse of Love and Living In a World Without Her? I'd take a new album by them anyday.

But that's not even the point. A new Pogues album would be just that, something new. To try and compare it to past glories and say it might somehow "spoil" the band's legacy is like saying that Steve Staunton might "spoil" his legacy as a player by being a crap manager. It's a different phase in the Pogues story, and hearing how the band have been playing recently, I just don't see how a new album could be anything but a classic.

I have really enjoyef the responses to this topic! As a newish member to the forum it is clear that the expectancy for The Pogues to record anything is huge!

I origionally posted to get a reaction and thats what ive got!

The buzz it would create if word got out The Band were in the studio would be fantastic don't you agree?

As for the next album being a classic?

We will all have to keep our fingers and toes crossed for a while longer!

But i bet it would get the old neckbumps up the first time ANYONE hears ANYTHING about a new release!!

Good Afternoon :D

but hey! that's the great thing about the Pogues wall of sound.......

I've always loved that about Pogues records. Potential places for sound are all filled - not just for the sake of being filled, but simply because of the fact that the amount of instruments take care of it by themselves.

I'd be happy even with a new album full of traditional tunes (not "cover songs") executed in the same manner as Parting Glass, Muirshin Durkin, etc etc etc and even a group of instrumentals. Finally put something out with the Chieftains or something, and throw in an original or two.
