Don't spoil the magic?

Post Mon Jan 23, 2006 2:54 pm

Does anyone else think if The band recorded a new album or any new material for that matter it would be looked upon as a disapointment? what i mean is that every note and lyric would be scrutanised and compaired to everything that went before it.

Is it not better to get to the xmas shows and enjoy the Band playing what they know at their best?

would all of that suffer if a poor collection of songs was released?

BUT having started this thread i would be curious to hear any new material.

To be honest i don't know I've just got up!

One thing though a new would sell like hot cakes!

I don't know. I think it would be pretty dumb to compare it to their earlier material, cos they're like fifteen-twenty years older now. Their music style has obviously matured/changed a lot in these years (if it haven't, then I'm scared of 'em). I think it would be wiser to look upon any new material as something unique - that way, it would probably be more appreciated.

I bet a lot of people would be pick on Shane's singing were they ever to release anything new, cos a lot of people seem to not be able to accept that he doesn't sound like he did when he was thirty.

I don't see how something new would spoil the magic of the old works. The old stuff is good, and will always be good. I personally think that Peace and Love is their weakest album. Does this mean I think it spoils the magic of If I Should Fall from Grace with God? Or Red Roses for Me? Hell no!

However, I think something new would probably be fantastic. The guys still got it in 'em, as shown on the latest gigs (though, I've yet to see them, but I've heard bootlegs, and other peoples opinions, so that's what I'm judging from), as well as the members¨' other works.
So Philip, Spider, and all ye others, don't let people like this discourage you - I'm sure you can still work miracles :D

To say nothing of the song quality, it is clear that a new album would have the patchwork feel of Peace & Love, no matter what the music itself would sound like. There is no way that the band would let Shane have the control he had on the first three albums. I know, I know, it was always a "group effort." Well, I like the group that wrote Old Main Drag, Broad Majestic Shannon, and A Pair of Brown Eyes better than the group that penned Blue Heaven, Six To Go, and The Sun and the Moon. Call me crazy.

Even if Shane were allowed total control of the songwriting, he's clearly well past his prime. Most of his best songs with the Popes are either re-workings of traditional songs (Song With No Name, Paddy Public Enemy No. 1) or re-hashings of his own stuff (Aisling, Mother Mo Chroi, Haunted).

On the other hand, I wouldn't want to bow out with Pogue Mahone and The Crock of Gold either, if I were them.

I think you almost answered some of my question Danny Boy with "People would pick holes in Shanes' voice!"

Listen i not saying i wouldn't want anymore material from The Band! I am thinking it would have to be up there with the First three albums, almost a back to the roots kind of deal?

Sometimes a group has to forget its bad times long enough just to remember the good! And i have a funny feeling after 3 Reunion years that may have happened already?

maybe they all need to push the boulder off the cliff together?

Just my opinion

BTW Phillip thanks for the email RE: American Refrigerator 8)

Personally, I have more faith in the creativity and musicianship of the band to worry about any new material being a letdown. There are many positives of new material. New material would innoculate the Pogues from any charges of being a "nostalgia only" band. As for Shane's voice it sounded pretty good on the Dublin boot from Christmas. I don't know if a new release would expand the fan base but I presume that the existing fan base wouldn't give a rip that Shane doesn't sound the way he did on Red Roses for Me. Finally, I would love to hear where the band as a whole and individualy have developed musically in the past 15 years. Subtle bits like Chevron's slide guitar on Dirty Old Town from the Brixton 2001 show make me think that there is more potential in the Pogues than replaying IISFWGWG for the 10,000 time. I would welcome any release from the band at this point, original or otherwise.

No, it's in fact Mr Woods, using a bottleneck on his bouzouki, but hey! that's the great thing about the Pogues wall of sound.......

I think the idea of a new album is exciting. Shane may not be churning out great songs as prolifically as he once did, but don't forget how some of the others' songwriting has developed over the years. I had the pleasure of seeing The Wisemen live 3 times and can tell you Spider has developed into a really good songwriter. Terry and Darryl (as Bish) have produced good solo albums and that's without even mentioning Jem and Phil- who are both more than capable of writing great songs. I also really liked the stuff Andrew wrote in the band's later days (such as My Baby's Gone) and James' Drunken Boat was good. Basically, all 8 of them are capable of writing songs that I want to hear and would buy, and I really can't see them making a bad record. Even in the worst case scenario of The Pogues on an off day, it would still be better than the vast majority of music coming out right now.

So is there a format for how a new pogues album would sound?

I think if they got past a new one that would be a watershed for greater things to come!

Supply and Demand?

Suck it and see i say!

I think if they did another one it would be important that they didn't try and make Rum Sodomy part 2 or If I Should Fall part 2. I think the best albums happen when those involved just go where the songs take them.
