Of the "big" songs, I think Brown Eyes is overrated.

Fiesta is a song I don't have strong feelings about, but like others have said is incredible in concert (probably due to Mr. Chevron's dancing).

(U2's Bullet the Blue Sky is another song that sounds incredible live,
especially at an open air show).

Is this a joke thread or something? Firstly Fairlytale of New York is overrated and now a Pair of Brown Eyes?? They are probably, in my humble opinion, the best two Pogues songs. I fell in love with the Pogues after hearing Fairytale of New York and I have feeling that Fairytale is a victim of its own brilliance as it seems that since its wangled its way into the Christmas Greatest Hits tunes and onto the radio at Christmas (Don’t forget up until a few years ago it wasn’t on any of the Xmas Cds and you never really heard it on the radio) a lot of Pogues fans have started to abandon this song. I think it’s a fantastic piece and has so many different styles of music (if that’s what you call it) in one song. Funny thing about Fairytale is that the first time I saw the film Once Upon A Time in America I kept thinking about Fairytale of New York and I couldn’t figure out why as it has no relation to it and just thought to myself that it must be because of the New York connection, although I'd never thought that with any other movie about New York. Imagine my surprise when in last years documentary it mentioned that this film was a major influence on the song as it was on in the tour bus all the time. Still can't put my finger on exactly what triggered it in my brain. Also it’s a song that I can listen to all year round, I mean lets be honest its hardly Merry Christmas Everybody or Jingle Bells is it. Pair of Brown eyes is another complete classic. Suppose its all about opinions isnt .

I've asked this before but it perhaps can stand a little repetition:

By whom are any of these songs overrated? The millions, nay billions of people who have yet to buy them?

I think the question is supposed to be a polite way of saying which pogues song dont you like. Ive no idea why the question couldnt have been asked as that but there you go. I personally think that the Pogues as a group have been undervalued from the begining so to say that any song is overated is a bit weird. Thats just me though

They're no shit pogues songs because they are a good band. They wouldnt release something if it was shit. How any one can be a pogues fan and dislike any song is silly.
Most overated band is greenday. Their early stuff when they just played straight up fast punk was alright but then they became mega famous and started writing 'slow' songs. Nothing wrong with that if they were good songs but you cant write slow songs if all you have got is one guitar playing power chords as the main sound. Unless some one here thinks of one but i cant.

You can write and release anything, if someone listens to.

By the way, I'm not sure that all the Pogues members are proud of all their songs...

Definition of Overrated?

Post Mon Oct 02, 2006 1:43 pm

I guess overrated means different things to everyone here. I said
"Brown Eyes" was overrated, but contrary to what some posted, it doesn't
mean I don't like the song. To me, if I had a choice to hear (what I consider to be "underrated" songs) say, London Girl, Sit Down by the Fire,
or Rake, I would bump Brown Eyes. I wouldn't bump Brown Eyes for
say, Cotton Fields or Hell's Ditch.

Pair of brown eyes is alright, but not stunning
Rainy Night In Soho drags, but the piano riff is ace
Fairytale is overplayed, tends to get a bit dull, but is the only song others know
Boys From the county hell and streams of whiskey tend to get a bit old after a few listens
Body of an American is my fave, but that last slow bit is too long
NOW sick bed of cuchulainn is probably the best!

Pogues songs you don't like?

Post Fri Oct 09, 2009 9:27 pm

I don't know whether this topic already existed or not, but I could not find it. So I'm asking you, do you have some Pogues songs which you don't like?

I personally can't think of a Pogues song which I hate, but there are some which I don't like that much:

Gridlock, Tombstone, Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go, Wild Cats of Kilkenny...

They are not bad, but they would probably be my least favorite songs.

What about you? If something like this already exists, sorry and close ;)

Good Night!

I feel really bad about answering this too, but I don't like these that much:

The Auld Triangle
Sickbed
The Old Main Drag
Drunken Boat
The Leaving of Liverpool

The last one may surprise you, but reason I don't like this is because it's not the original version, the one we sing in Liverpool, it's been altered as people have sung it round the world, nothing wrong with that, these things happen, just grew up singing slightly different words, that's all.
