Different versions?

I got the following posted in the guestbook on my website.

Love the site. I would like to suggest a couple of things for inclusion in the excellent "released recordings" section. Firstly, there are two versions of White City- the single mix is different to the one on the album (though it is not credited as different on the sleeve). If you listen to the chorus on the single you will hear some high pitched backing vocals (from Darryl?) that are absent/a lot quieter on the album version. Secondly, the version of Turhish Song Of The Damned on The Rest of The Best is not the same as the original album version- the bass sounds a lot flatter and overall it seems less produced. Maybe it is a demo, as happened with London Girl on the same album. Thirdly, the version of Rabinga on the re-release of the Straight To Hell soundtrack is different to that on the original one. Compare the first few seconds of each and you will see.

Anyone else who has noticed this? The differences is obvious on Rabinga.

Theres also the case of "The Irish Rover", which has an extra verse on the vinyl single than on other formats. Dont know if you already have that on your site or not, but if not theres a little heads up.

Yes, it's fair to say that Stiff/ZTT/WEA/Island were not always clear about these matters on labels and sleeves. I tried to unravel all these mysteries when we did the remastering, but myself and Nick Robbins only really succeeded in opening up more cans of worms.

Lade, I think there should be a couple of other additions to your list as well:

A Rainy Night In Soho (1991 'remix') - there are actually 2 versions of this, the full-length one (similair to the live version) that was released on A Rainy Night In Soho 12" single, and as far as I know is unavailable on CD; and the edited version without the first chorus and if memory serves correct a shorter instrumental break in the middle. This was on the 7" single and all CD releases, e.g Hell's Ditch remastered, Ultimate Collection, etc.

Junk Theme - there are also 2 versions of this, the full-length one from the original Sid & Nancy CD and the Haunted single, and an edited version from the rerelease of the Sid & Nancy CD missing about the first 10 seconds - although this could just be down to shoddy mastering on the rerelease!

What we really need is this all rounded up with a post for each song.

I thought this way would make it easier for completists like me.
One other thing is the version of London Lady on The Very Best Of... the rough mix as it sounds different.

That would be "London Girl," however I have all the Pogues rare singles and B-Sides on two CDR discs, plus rare live albums, however, I don't promote to sale of bootlegs due to the fact that the band doesn't get paid for them. But I would start with the box set that is set to be released on March 17 of this year. Also, try some underground music shops in your town, they always seem to carry a few rare items. Anyway, happy hunting.

The version of "London Girl" you are referring to is not even an alternative mix, not even a rough mix, it's a monitor mix, the sort of thing the engineer makes up for you in 5 minutes in the middle of the night at the end of an exhausting recording session so you can check your work at home later - the musical equivalent of a sketchbook. The Brothers Warner have only infrequently been left to their own devices ever since.

And incidentally, though I know you're just using it as an example, there never was a demo of "White City" or, for that matter, almost anything on Peace And Love. "Boat Train" and "Night Train To Lorca" both had rather good demos.
