POGUE MAHONE

Post Sat Jan 07, 2006 11:59 am

The last original album i bought by the Pogues was Waiting for Herb which I was really disapointed in and kind of severed my original intrest in the pogues at that stage (1993 ish I think, although I have always continued to play all the other albums over the years). I have bought the odd best of album and was really impressed with the one released last year with the live set which I kind of play dailey ha ha. Recently, I realised that i had never heard any material off Pogue Mahone and got a copy of it for Xmas (if not only to complete the collection) and was suprised by how good this album actually is. Songs like How Come, Living in a world without her, Love you till the end and the excellent Dylon cover when the ship comes in. It seems like that the album was a lot lot better than the previous album however the band split straight after??? Anyone else have any opionion on this album? Any comments from the band would be cool as well>

Definitely beter than Waiting for Herb. I never listen to Waiting for Herb but quite often listen to Pogue Mahone. I just like spider's 'raw' singing style and there are quite a few gems on that album. Shame they don't do them live

I think it is really good as well, definitely an improvement over it's predecessor. I contribute a lot of this to their partial return to roots. Granted, it wasn't quite the same as in the days of Shane, but it was more true to the Pogues than Waiting for Herb was. I know that Phil, James and Terry left the band before Pogue Mahone was recorded, and so maybe the new members, Pogues fans, would've influenced the more classic Pogues sound on the album.

Waiting for herb, to me, just wasn't the Pogues. It felt more like a pop album. There were three really good songs, though, being Tuesday Morning, Haunting, and Drunken Boat.

Yeah its a cool album. I would live to hear what Mr Chevron thinks of this album and it did it have any baring on the band splitting up soon after. Just out of intrest

Side One of Pogue Mahone is one of the most interesting and consistent things the band ever did, whatever the line up. But I think we can all agree at this point that it's not the Pogues unless we are all present and correct.

I couldn't agree more. I've always considered "Waiting for Herb" and "Pogue Mahone" to be more like post-Pogues projects, much like Shane's "The Snake" and "The Crock of Gold" albums.

Well, I am not sure if they were the Pogues...but imho rather they were. Just other band members got more space.
And I like it, imho it is one of their best albums, not only musically, but even lyrically (oh, dear Oretown).

But I hate critics who said, that the Pogues were burned out, it is commercial and so on. They didn´t listen to it or are mad. Not only punk energy is true energy.

Btw. what is wrong with Pachinko? I heard it sucks, but I like it.

And I am sort of sad that nothing from PM is played live - for example Oretown would imho do fantastic gig end.

Suppose ive been carried away with completing my collection since the re-issues. Taking Mr C's comments on board obviously reminds me why I didnt by the album in the first place. Ie The Pogues have to be complete to be the real Pogues. Still a nice couple of numbers though. Any chance you may pop into scouse land and play a gig anytime in the future?
