Hi can anyone tell me which version of A Rainy Night in Soho is on the Very Best of the Pogues - is it the 1986 original or the 1991 remix?

The remix. And the same version is on the Best Of the Pogues album as well.

I tend to listen to it even more than Fairytale. It definitely is a toss up.

this is repeated twice in the song, i guess it could be the chorus

Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

That seems more a repeated coda than a chorus. But then what do I know aobut the structure of song lyrics?

Certainly once of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.

They definitly do not need to. I don't think any "expert" would claim that a chorus is a needed factor to call a piece a song. I've always enjoyed "story" songs that don't include choruses like "She's Leaving Home" or "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" BUT I will take a good song you can really geat into and drink to that has a great chorus any day over those others. Lots of artists (my opinion) make a living off of songs that have horrible verses and wonderful -genius- choruses: John Mellencamp, some of Springsteen's stuff a few of Paul Simon's songs too (A FEW). Of course there are other songs that are not "story" songs that have recurring lines or verses but not real choruses "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" being one that comes to mind.

Well...question is if everyone else agrees...no, not everyone, as I know at least one human being who disagrees :-)
