Dropkick Murphys came on to "the Foggy Dew" by I think the Chieftains and Sinead O'Connor.
Pogues came on to "Straight to Hell" by The Clash.

Both bloody good numbers to open any gig eh!!

Is there a story / an explanation why the Pogues come up to that song?

It was Shane's idea last Christmas. It worked, we liked it, it was nice to acknowledge Joe's importance to us, we kept it. We did try to change it this year but found nothing we preferred.

It's one of the old and sweet Irish rebel songs, I think it was a priest who wrote this one originally, Atleast the lyrics. I don't remember his name though.

.. One of my very favourite Irish songs. :) Thanks for the information on who recorded this version, as I was very curious about it, it did sound alot like Sinead. Also thank you Phillip for a great show in Glasgow!

Saint Bushmill's Choir does kindof a Celtic-ska version of that song.

Hymnself,
I wasn't infering that Sinead and the Chieftains was the original
Merely that it was the version used by the DKM's!

there was a great rock n roll number before Pogues came on , it was played just after 'Roadrunner' by Jonathan Richman. Anyone know what it was?

It's a great opener. Hearing Joe's voice is always a somewhat bittersweet experience for me, but it's felt right every night.

Got a great version of The Foggy Dew by Alan Stivell with Shane singing the "From the plains of Royal Meath" verse.

Yea, all 3 songs Shane did with Stivell are interesting. The best version I have ever heard of The Foggy Dew was by The Dubliners as sung by the late great Luke Kelly.
