Post Thu Dec 15, 2005 11:28 am

1.What's this "drunk tank" that is mentionned at the very beginning of the song?
2. What is meant by "Got on a lucky one Came in eighteen to one"?
3. What is meant by "...lying dead ON A DRIP in that bed"?
Thanks old mates for your help!!!!!!!!!

1. Drunk Tank to me means the place where they put the drunks to sleep off their hangovers etc..
2. 18 to 1, a bet
3. Drip is what they put people on in a hospital bed, when they are in a bad way, God knows the medical terms

That's what it means to me

ruined my dearest concept:
drunk tank - unsteady on its tracks... with wry turret...
turned off hatch... suspicious spots on armour and sounds associated with cupla tunes at once heard from inside

drip - a dull, boring person, who turns everything into funeral and everyone into dead

That’s it. Unsteady on its tracks... Going zig-zag down the street... or pavement... Smashing eighteen unsuspecting passer-bys, turning them into one big mess. ("Got on a lucky one / Came in eighteen to one") *Sigh.* The song holds a much bigger tragedy than it might seem. And what an anti-drinking message it conveys... ;)

A drunk tank in the US is a jail cell where they put you to sober up. This is shown in the video when Shane is taken there by police officer Matt Dillon and ends up in a cell where Terry Woods is singing "The Rare Ould Mountain Dew"

From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drunk_driv ... ted_States)

Most of the time, the driver will either be kept in a holding cell (the "drunk tank") until they are deemed sober enough to be released, or sent to jail to wait for their first court hearing (or until they can get bailed out).

I swear when I first read this response I parsed it as:

"got on a lucky one = I banged a winning horse"

I'm still laughing.

I can help you out on this one Vince.I know for a fact The Drunk Tank was Shanes favourite bar when he was a teenager in Tipperary. He was fond of a local girl but she was only seventeen and not allowed in the pub. However on her birthday she appeared beside Shane at the counter and as he elequently states "came on to one".Being Christmas Eve,they left the pub early and headed for Midnight Mass.Shane took her back to his ancesteral home after. The relationship soured the following morning when Shanes Mum was unable to cook his traditional Birthday/Christmas Day fry-up because she couldn't find the fat.Hours later Shane rolled the drunken mott over and found it.Shane knew then it would make a brilliant song but the episode scarred him and as he recently said he rewrote it a hundred odd times.
