ditto.... assuming you first pick up Red Roses. To me Red Roses is the bud, Rum is the beginning of the bloom, IF I should Fall is near full bloom, and Hell's Ditch is post bloom ... in a beautiful state of early decay, still beautiful, where you begin to mourn the loss of teh flower and regret not appreciating it enough in its prime. Peace and Love is another flower on the same stem that is in full bloom, but half of it is sublime and the other half has been somehow mutated into a different flower.

Sorry... haven't had a drink for a whole week. See what happens when you decide to sober up. You get.... sober.

Fitzgerald: I wouldn´t generalise like that. But truth is that some things on Ditch are marvellous - such as Lorca´s Novena, especially Wake of medusa...and well - Hell´s Ditch.

Cheers! I think I'll probably go for Red Roses For Me first and take it from there. Saying that I'm bound to find myself coming out of the record shop having spent more than I meant to and most of the Pogues back catalouge.

Anyone watch Folk Brittania and The Shane Macgowan documentary on BBC 4 last night? Some of the live footage was interesting. I looked on Amazon and saw some VHS tapes of Pogues live but no DVD's. Anyone know of any or anything in the pipeline?

Ralph,
This is worth a read:

It's a review of If I Should Fall, but it also praises Red Roses.

Great piece of writing too. Just shows you what can be achieved by critics who are NOT drunk.

It is indeed. I've been reading a few of his reviews lately (since I saw a link posted elsewhere on this forum). His style is so original.

Just want to say thanks to you all for your advice. Very helpful! I bought Red Roses For Me and am really happy with it! Favourite tunes at the moment are Waxie's Dargle and The Auld Triangle. Cheers!

I want to buy a Pogues album

Post Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:28 am

Hi new to this forum and although I like the Pogues I haven't got any of their studio albums, just used to listen to me old man's Pogues stuff. Anyway I want to buy a Pogues album this lunchtime and was wondering what you guys think is the best example of their work/best to start off with
Thanks for your help

Well you could go for the Ultimate Collection. A 2 disc edition with one live gig. Pretty much all of the 'hits' are on there

I'd say that If I Should Fall from Grace with God is their best studio album, though the best of... The Ultimate Collection will give you a better overall view of the bands career.
