One lyric that always sounded corny to me ...

Post Mon Nov 14, 2005 10:30 pm

I know I know, I can't believe I'm saying this either ...

The line "and drink with my friends in the Hammersmith broadway" from "The Dark Streets of London" always sounds a little conry to me, because of the phrase 'my friends' . Don't get me wrong, I love the tune, but when I listen to or try to sing this one that lyric always sounds a little, I don't know ... like it's from a childrens TV show or something (minus the 'drink' of course). It's like I hear it as "and play with my friends in the Hammersmith Broadway" or something.

Just thought I'd get that off my chest, God that felt good.

Anyone agree ? Disagree ? Think I've committed blashemy ?

I have no problem with that lyric. I do, however, accept that this lyric from "Haunted" is terrible:

"He was so cool he could have put out Vietnam"

There's just no way for that lyric not to sound like it was written by a fourteen-year-old.

hahha yeah, I've always thought the same. The whole song in general isn't very good, either, I don't think.

And there isn't a bad verse in the whole of "The Dark Streets of London."

I think you may be misguided or mistaken. On reflection; I think the phrase I'm searching for is "talking total bollocks". How much ale have you had?

sometimes life is going sucha way that one begins to operate with term "friends" much more carefully than in childhood.
Lucky you, if you don't feel it.

easier to apreciate the line if it's not judged as a 'lyric' but rather as the words a teenage girl falling in love - at a time when the cinemas where full of vietnam movies. Something she might say?

Something lost in translation?

Post Tue Nov 15, 2005 12:22 pm

ooh and as a Londoner, there's absolutely nothing corny about the line 'drink with my friends in Hammersmith' that I can see at all!! The phrase must have different associations in Newfoundland than London

Good point, guest. But it still makes me wince a bit when I hear it - and I love that song.

As for the thought that began this thread - I've never had a problem with that line either, but I think I know what you mean, Monreith. It's far from a glaringly awful line - how could it be, coming from the pen of MacGowan? - but there's something about it that doesn't sit completely properly with me.

Not complaining though. Shane's worst is still miles ahead of most others' best.
