for right now...

"Life has often tried to stretch me
But the rope always went slack"

"So I saw that train
And I got on it
With a heartful of hate
And a lust for vomit"

"And the next time I see you we'll be down at the Greeks
There'll be whiskey on Sunday and tears on our cheeks"

sorry cant choose from just one.

just a few of mine:

In Ireland they'll put you away in the Maze
In England they'll keep you for several long days
God help you if ever you're caught on these shores
And the coppers need someone
And they walk through that door
(streets of sorrow/birmingham six)

It isn't the mice in the wall
It isn't the wind in the well
But each night they march
Out of that hole in the wall
Passing through on their way
Out of hell
(sit down by the fire)

Every time that I look on the first day of summer
Takes me back to the place where they gave ECT
And the drugged up psychos
With death in their eyes
And all of this really
Means nothing to me
(dark streets of london)

and a popes one for good measure

So as I carry on down the long lonesome highway
I meet other people on the way
More broken hearted lovers who’ve been left along the by-way
Living by night and hiding from the day
(lonesome highway)

I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the fist time
I never think about the last

And as I sit and talk to you I see your face go white
The shadow hanging over me is no trick of the light
The spectre on my back will soon be free
The dead have come to claim a debt from me.

To many good ones to choose from

"Five green bottles sitting on the floor
and I wish to christ, I wish to christ that
I had 15 more"

"Father McGreer buys an arse cold beer
and a shot for father Loyola. Father Johns
got the clap again and he's drinking coca-cola"

and on and on ...
"I could fuck all the whores in damnation me boys"

She kissed me softly on the lips
She took my hand without a sound
This WAS our happily ever after
So motherfucker kiss the ground.

man really there are TOO many great lines each one conjuring up different images, some of violence some peacefull and serene I love them all and where they take me inside my head, but this one sums up a very real memory i share with my fiance' so it gets my vote for at least top 5....

I've been listening to NW3 a lot lately and my favorite line from that tune is:

In the filth and piss they lived in
They'd sometimes hum an air
And talk in tounges of madness
Keeping time upon the chair.

That's just amazing writing.

It's really a shame that the song was never given the proper treatment - that is, recorded for an album. I suppose it's just another entry in the list of things that never quite happened for the Pogues. It's up there with FTONY only reaching the #2 slot, in my opinion.

Just love this - especially the last line - genius

I met with Bill James we fought over crusts
I called him a whore and he booted me crotch
Then we shared out the jack and we thought it a treat
The compliments pass when the quality meet

The last line is taken from Behan - but it makes it no less genius. :)
